  1. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by scottyb1: Mackey Special
  2. Man, that's awsome!! I had to look closer to see if there was a hook!! Great fly!
  3. My name is Scott. I'm almost 49 years old and have been fishing since I was 8 years old and tying flies since I was 9!! I've grown up in Idaho and have fished allot of it. I got interested in fly fishing by grabbing my step fathers fly rod one day when the family was out camping at Mormon Reservoir. My dad gave me a few tips and pointers and left me to fish. After about 15 minutes I caught a blue gill. When I had it on, I thought it was the biggest fish in the world!! Boy was I surprised when I got it to the bank and found out how small it really was. I was used to fishing with weights and what have you, so I was hooked then and there. My dad was a fly fishing enthusiast, that traveled all across Idaho as a traveling salesman, and he fished everywhere he went. His most favorite place was the Big Lost River that runs through Mackay Idaho. He pretty much only used the fly that originated out of Mackay just for the Big Lost called the Mackay Special. It is made from horse hair with an orange belly woven in. It is the toughest fly I know of. He got me into fly tying because the Mackay Special was just about the only fly he used and he got tired of having to make special trips from Boise to Mackay just to replenish his supply. He had a good friend that was one of the greatest fly tiers around at the time, Charley Higgins. Charley gave me some basic lessons along with how to tie the Mackay Special for my dad!! I've been tying ever since. It's one of the few things I can loose myself in. I will get some pictures of it and some instructions (I hope) posted soon. Looking forward to learning some new flies and techniques.
