Hello Paul, As you explained, yes it was according to Wiki on "Dobson Fly", the female. Smaller mandibles, and determinedly vicious creature. It was in fact two inches long, and intimidating. :bugeyes: .Thank you for the education,the little push in the right direction, and for being accessible on this great arena of flyfishermen. Also I applaud your command of English, and I correct myself on the word "plumb", when I meant "plum". And yes, clearly there was no "eye",,Ha,Ha,,again you have to deal with [i'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other, deaf in one ear, can't hear out of the other, me.Ya man, really cool stuff. Hey Satchmo, I tried awhile back to access your post on the Stonefly you observed back on Apr. 28? on the Neshannock river,,password problem kept me from the stuff you posted,photos etc. so this am I went to realistic fly tying,saw a pm by Paul vd Driesche,"yet another stonefly". This pm reminded me to get back to your post which I just did. Now here is my story.I snatched a large[ I think] stonefly hatching on the surface Sunday am on the Pequest river near Belvedere,NJ. It was 1-1/2 " very stocky body, a dull med plum cast with a pair of mandibles[ it was biting on my palm as I was observing it's debut]. I showed it to several others who said they had never seen that bug. This bug was causing quite a commotion on the water and I had trepidations about handling it. Aside from this I have seen a few like the one you described and dark ones [smaller] so this one was a new experience. Alas I would have photo'd, but I dunked my P&S last week in the Delaware.btw your photos were great,did you take any with wings developed? Anyway I wish I could get this bug identified. Thanks, Tom.

Hello Paul, Very nice work, but do you fish it? :dunno: Sunday,the 31st of May I was fishing the Belvedere,NJ. section of the Pequest River about 11 am and spotted a large commotion on water surface. It was ,I think a very large stonefly?, about 1 1/2" inches long, dun plumb color,with mandibles which [when I scouped it up to show my nephew] it was busily employing on my palm with noticeable pressure. I also showed it to two other fellows ,no one had ever seen one befor,nor myself. So many thoughts have gone through my mind since,no camera,etc., etc. Well anyway I will be asking about its identification till I'm satisfied. Anyone can jump into this,I'm all ears,er, eyes. HI REX,VERY NICE PHOTO, FLY,AND THANKS FOR THE DRESSING. LOOKS LIKE LEISENRING AND HIDY ARE BACK ON BROADWAY. I BOUGHT THE 2ND. EDITION BACK IN 71' . I STARTED TO DRESS MY FLYS PER THEIR METHOD,BUT WAS NOT DEDICATED ENOUGH TO HANG WITH IT , SO THE GOOD BOOK SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE SHELF.AWHILE BACK I REREAD IT AND THEN REREAD IT AGAIN, THEN STUMBLED INTO THIS SITE AND BINGO ,I GOT THE HOTS OVER NYMPHS&FLYMPHS AGAIN. BEEN TYING THE DANG THINGS FOR ABOUT 2 WKS.NOW.SOON AS MY CASTING ARM HEALS ENOUGH, I'LL BE DROWNING THEM IN MOUNTAIN WATER. THANKAGAIN. TOM.
