  1. Newfie Flytyer,

I recognize those bugs. "Big split winged bombers, split wing brown bugs" They are also native to N.S. I can see why you would have success. Haven't tied them myself so I can't really tell you anything except, the fact that I recognized what they were is about the best compliment I can give, I figure.

  2. Thanks.

Living more out to the "Rural" you know how it is, the fishing is great but the flytying socials are few. So this is where I rub elbows with fellow tiers. Here, on this forum. When people hear I have begun to tie they get excited and say cool..always wanted to...or use to, gave it up, wasn't for me. Even the local retailer doesn't tie much anymore.

I have begun to wonder if maybe while they were learning they got too frustrated over certain materials. I know I do at times and I am willing to give them a lot more time before I say that they are not for me. I just hope they are not the ones found in the flies that are not available here.

I want to make the ones I see on the shows but I can never find retail anywhere. Great streamers, baitfish, scuds etc. I want to have the adventure of finding out what I can haul out of the dark underhangs along the banks that have been calling me lately. I want to have the variety to change up while casting to the far reaches.

That is why I am not going to give up too quickly on certain materials and how to handle them. It is the reason I am investing so much time and $ in this. It is the reason I push myself out there in the swaps and contests. There are a few environments where I fish that I have not conquered yet. They are my new "mountains to conquer". I know that there are fish there, I have seen them leap and glimmer beautifully in the setting sun in the evenings, Big, beautiful and glistening. Huge bodies slapping the calm waters as it takes the fly back to the waters with it. But not my fly. My friend hears the splash and all I say is " that is my next mountain".

So I will try to conquer the "hair" that snaps so easily or moves to freely when I gather way too much of it......

and I will keep listening to the slap of the water with a smile on my face, knowing it will be mine someday, it will be on my fly when it comes down slapping. Must keep on tying..... If at first...

Humble is something I experience through this learning and as far as being pushed well we all need that in many facets of our life at times. I found myself frustrated also at the vise. The reason.. I after 5 mins looked and realised I needed to trim my fingernails. They were the reason for my frustrations. There you go.. :dunno: Always learning.

  4. Horseshoes:

I have received your flies. They look pretty good. I think you gave them really good try and also see that you you tied them as neat as possible. Very nice job.

Thanks for the support. I have come to realise that with out the picture in front of me at all times I can loose perception of the amount of hair etc that is needed. So I have started to invest in some great books. The first to arrive was " Shrimp & Spey Flies for Salmon & Steelhead" and I have more on the way. It is a fabulous book , besides the info it gives me clear pictures of proportions and amounts. Live and learn, always.

  5. Hi,

You can use old cassette containers or the plastic box that playing cards come in. I mean...you get them back. Look around at home or even while you are out somewhere and keep in mind what you are looking for. Sometimes it is good to " think outside the box" no pun intended.

I had already sent out my container in one swap so I had to look for alternatives. Next time you are in a corner store check out what some of the candy comes in etc. You get the drift. I hope this helped. Check out toyboxes....junk drawers....kitchen cupboards................

  6. Thanks for the compliment and as far as prehistoric I do see what you mean. I made this on a size 4 carp. Yes it won't let go (hopefully). I hope I do get the biggest trout in the spring. But as far as the full moon? In my town when it is a full moon I usually try to stay inside. :hyst: There really is some truth to that.

  7. I was over to Hatches TV watching a few videos on tying, 'lefty deciever' and a marabou that wrapped forever :o . Before logging off I thought I would check for any new patterns being entered into the database and I came upon 'Nymph-o-Minnow' tied by trevally.

Well.. I got inspired, 'that looks great' I thought, 'I think I'll give that a try'. Now.. this is where I know I am not alone. Listen up for I know a few have been here; I went to my shelves etc. and started looking through my hackles and saw one I had forgotten I had. "this is nice....' I say. reaching over I pick up a bag of marabou and Think ' that would go good with it'. What about this? You get the picture?

When I went back to the computer to look at the pattern list. Not much was the same.... But I had a vision  !!! I must follow my quest and see what I can create. Well i did. I'm not exactly sure what this is if anything but I can't wait to try it out. Have a gander....
