  1. Great...tubes it will be... :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
  2. Definately wrap them slow and not overlapping each other. I use a rotary vide which I find makes easier wrapping. Also, don't waste your left over hackle, it's too expensive if you buy good ones.
  3. thanks for the swap. It was a great concept. I hope txflytier comes through for you.
  4. I'd report him to the moderators if he's failed to complete two swaps. This will save future swaps from being affected.
  5. I was tying up some tube flies for next season and came across a great one for baitfish....Are tube flies OK for a swap...yes or no? Either way is OK for me, as I know some poeple don't use tube flies.
  6. Very nice start...now your world will grow as you add to this.
  7. I only use the jig hook when drifting it under a float when I'm using a centerpin set up. For the fly rod, I use a standard streamer or Salmon hook.
  8. Ok fly attempt number 6....I went with finer thread...I'm probably making hard on myself using size 16 hooks too but oh well. I still ove learning this but my fingers are killing me.
  9. That's funny... It's nice up here to be able to have real polar bear fur too...legal here...but why not when we have to scare them from our garbage everynight...or stop them from scraping the walls of our ice huts... :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
  10. Thanks...I'm definately hooked. I've done another 4 this morning and they get better with each try.
  11. I think it'll be lots of practise...now I'm going to try with finer threads....
  12. Here's how I forced myself to learn. I have along way to go until I'll be happy with the results but this is my story. I hosted a swap and as an extra Stewynofly sent me a couple extras a few being flies with woven bodies. Well I fell in love with them and had to learn this technique as I was in search of new challenge. I consulted Stewynofly, and searched the web endlessly learning this technique. Then along comes the 'Woven swap." Stewynofly PM's me and advises me of the swap and tells me I should join. Well I did, and then really started to panic as I have yet to even try a woven body. Well tonight I sat down and practised a few times on large wire with yarn then said, 'What the heck...get one in the vise." Well here's my first attempt. I figure I'll be tying a couple dozen more before they are good enough to submit to teh swap, but it's a start. Thanks Stewynofly for getting me hooked on this fun technique.
  13. Received flies today form SKOLI. Beautiful Streamers. Blue Bomb Bunny. This fly is the answer to my search for a "beefier" steelhead streamer. Great work Skoli...these will be killers.
  14. I got my flies today. What a great addition to my collection. I'm addicted to tying saltwater flies but as I live no where near saltwater, I just collect them until that day when I use them. I'll be in Flroida this year and these flies will be going with me. J74snook, great swap and I love that shrimp. I'll be using that one up here in freshwater and will be tying some for myself. The Murdered Puppet will also double as a great Steelhead fly up here. Thanks everyone for such great looking flies. My collection is now looking really good.
  15. It's the best way...I love getting Flies from the southern states and trying them out in Canada. You'd be amazed how many times I've found a favorite pattern by using swapped flies from around the Continent.
  16. Any small nymph in dark colours San Juan worms in black or dark red Small streamers.
  17. Griffin Odyssey cam vise is my suggestion.
  18. I was lucky for the price I got but up in Canada, the Odyssey Cam vise usually sells for about $140-150. If you shop around, I'll bet you'll find a deal. try shows or ebay. I've now had the Cam vise for a while and I have to say it's great. I have no complaints and it's one tough little vise. I endorse it %100.
  19. No it's not weighted...I find they dive when retrieved but I'm not near saltwater so I don't know how they will perform in the Ocean...I hope they work out...
  20. Beginners are what makes this forum stay alive. We were all there once. Once you're proficient, you'll be here helping the next bunch of beginners. It keeps fishing alive and tying. For me, when I host a swap or enter one, I love when I see the message from a beginner saying he/she doesn't feel "good enough" to enter. I tell them to enter, and I wait for their flies over everyone else. I still remember my first flies and how bad they were. They still caught fish though. I have three flies from "beginners" that I've set aside ready for the spring. I have the person's name on the fly still. I want to catch a trophy with their fly, get a picture of the fish with the fly and then post it...i think that would be the best boost of confidence to any beginner...too bad you all have to wait unitl the ice goes away.
  21. Received very nice flies from Hounddog...you guys will love these. Thanks for the extras.
  22. I usually get out hte float rod for Steelhead here, as it works better on the larger rivers like Niagara... For a wet fly, I use this one that I created. Has never failed me when all else does. For baitfish imitations, I use a rainbow smelt imitation made from craft fur. I use Roe tied in bags and yarn flies, but I love this sucker spawn imitation I do using glue sticks.
  23. I rough cut with scissors, and I mean rough...Cut your body a lot larger than you want to teh point it seems silly. Then get those old fashioned two sided razor blades from teh drug store. They flex and hold a curve for shaped bodies. Again, just nip a bit off and work slowly to where you want the body. After 5-8 flies, you'll be a pro. Another point, those flex razors cut fingers very well also. I put a small piece of tape on the ends to help hold it. Good Luck...
  24. He gets three months leave, then he is retiring with full service Next September...unless he re-signs. Thanks again.
