  1. ok panfish, you have 50-100. this is a good start for a vice. if it was me i would never buy a kit. for the amount of materiels you get for your buck it does not get stretched at all. just get a good vice, scissors, and bobbin. this will get you started, buy materiels for one fly and master that fly then move on, materiel collection comes with time... angler by choice
  2. hey cj, if you are looking for a video davie mcphail (i think i spelled that right), on youtube he has a very good technique using foam for the extended body. also if you want a cool way to make hollow bodies with dubbing check out the NOR-vise on youtube as well he usses a needle but no thread and just spins antron on to the needle then cements the noodle and you got an extended hollow body.. check them out and show us what you come up with...
  3. ok to answer your question. neck hackle = one fly saddle = two, three, four, maybe five flies. the only difference is lenght to me that is, usually if a pattern like the one you are going to attempt to tie requires a saddle hackle its because of the lenght of the feather. you can easy use what you have just use one feather at a time. as for the second question, get rid of them. even if you stumble upon a good amount of feathrs that are from protected birds you still get a fine. unless you recive feathers from somebody who legally purchased them at a store a long time ago. so i am told. hope this answers your questions... 4. i have a traveler and i can tie anything on it. from big bucktail jigs for my brothers who cant figure out how to use a fly rod! down to a size 20 midge... it is very versitile. but then again any vise will work. it just depends on how you feel when you tie any fly. some vises are more comfortable then others. and if you have money to blow the options become wider.
  5. yeah its been nuked and its sitting on ice now, thanks for the tips. and i knew what i was getting into when i bought this cape the guy was really honest he grows them on his farm. very fast shipping and service. just get rid of the bugs and i got a deal. 3 weeks to save 100 bucks sounds good to me
  6. ok, so i bought a JC cape from ebay 40 bucks shipped fishing grade :headbang: (lots of broken but reparable eyes) my question for the masters here. when i looked at the cape it had two beetles small about the size of a grain of rice and they were reddish brown :crying: . how should i kill any bugs? and should i just take all of the eyes off of the skin seperate by size and quality and toss the skin will this take care of the problem :dunno: ? any help will be greatly appreciated.
  7. how about burning off the herl with bleach?
  8. usally i just whip finish, but if i had a choice it would be griffins thin-head multi coat.
  9. http://store.theflyshop.com/catalog/index....ath=337_426_427 this is the link that i came up with while looking for there hooks, now that i looked they raised there price to 3.39 for 25 hooks still a pretty good price if u ask me...
  10. Well from what i can ID it looks to me like TMC 200R rabbit hare for the tail ice dub, or antron for body rabbit hare in a dubbing loop brushed out for the thorax thin skin, swiss straw for the wingcase silly legs dont hold it to me if i am wrong it is just a guess :dunno: angler by choice!!1
  11. if you are looking for cheap hooks go to www.theflyshop.com no relation to this shop just cheap hooks 2.88 if i am correct for any size and style (streamer, salmon/steelhead, nymph, and so on) i have used these hooks and haven't noticed any difference. my 2 cents
  12. go with the saddle!!!! when i first started tying i bought a half cape grizzly and brown, differences between a saddle and a cape (for me at least) saddles are easier to tie with for the beginer because the stem is really thin and easier to bend on the hook shank, you also can tie 3-4 more flies with one saddle feather and that = cheaper cost to u. capes are not forgiving to you and are trickey to work with stem is fairly thick and takes some getting used to wrapping the hackle (short feather usually 1 feather per fly). once you get used to tying dry fly hackle (and you like tying dry flies) then buy a cape like every body said you get a broad range of sizes and you learn some new things...
  13. Charlie, i just bought a new hares mask and i was still unsure what to do with it, after reading my new christmas present (the fly tyers benchside reference) i just grabed a pinch from the cheeck area. if im correct your dubbing comes mostly from the underfur with some guard hairs to make it more buggy looking. also some tiers just trim all the hair off the mask and throw away the skin. its up to you if you are looking for just dubbing purchase this seperatly.
  14. yeah i thought so i just wasent sure. i took the skin out and inspected it no sign of bugs but you never know...
