    Furled Leaders

ToddFather got me hooked on them. Great leaders, eh?
  2. The Orvis store in Cornelius NC got rid of their tying stuff. Must be a lot more money in clothes! I'm not so sure I would write-off a bunch of my target customers by not attending to their needs. There may not be much cold, hard cash coming directly out of the tying department, but I'm willing to bet it that having that department gets a lot more feet in the door.
  3. Hey OSD, I have an Olympus D-490 but every attempt I made at photographing flies didn't work. They turned out either fuzzy or too small to really see. If I'm missing something and this camera will work I know I can find other ways to spend my Christmas winning! What settings do you use? My D-490 says macro to 8". That sure doesn't seem like macro to me. Thanks for responding!
  4. I have a chance to get a new digital camera and I think there are two requirements that I'd like, waterproofness (izzat a word?) and enough close up focusing capability to shoot flies. The camera I have now only goes down to 8". Not close enough without a lot of editing and even then... Does anyone have a recommendation for a water resistant digital camera that'll shoot flies? Thanks, and Merry Christmas
  5. I dunno if they have stores everywhere, but Michaels crafts store usually has a '50% off any item' coupon in the Sunday paper. I bought my Ott light that way in Michigan and note that they have Michaels craft stores here down yonder too. Say thanks, Jack!
  6. Hey Don, good to see another familiar face on board. Did you guys hit the weedy lake this summer? There be big bass in there, eh!?
  7. Hey Ralph, I have an order for you. Howz about whipping up a dozen #20 Royal Wulffs for me! Calf tail is so much fun!!! Hatchbomb'll tell you, big fish were attracted to them on the Madison.
  8. Hey gang! I'm coming up to bite the bird with family then it's either pike on Lake Saint Clair or steel in Ohio. I sent this page to Ron (phoggcutter). He's hooked real bad!
  9. Hey! My name is Jack and I learned about this site from the Michigan Sportsman site. I recognize a lot of names here from the M.S. site though I've only met a couple of those fine folks. I've been fishing all of my life but went 'elite' status about 18 years ago. I am a traveling salesman and thought fly fishing would keep me out of lounges and bars enough to keep my all-important drivers license. So far, so good. I managed to fish 3-4 times a week during the peak seasons in Michigan and now that a job change forced a move here to North Carolina I find myself fishing just about as frequently. There ARE fish in N.C. I am also a certifiable gear junky. I have been tying for a few years now but the darned move knocked the wind out of my sails. I'm still trying to find a permanent spot in the new home for my tying stuff. Though I left a real good group of fishing buddies in Michigan, I finally found a group or two down here who like get together and fish, though the fishing is almost secondary to the great food and great fellowship! Nice site and glad I found it!
  10. I like a fast action rod but with a progressive taper that allows for close-in work through a less-than-fast tip section ( no broomsticks allowed!). A new rod that doesn't seem to get a lot of press is the St. Croix Legend Elite. It has the best of all worlds. It's lighter than most rods yet has starch when and where it is needed. It'll toss the whole line without making you 'rip your shorts' yet allow you to plant one on the nose of that cruiser at 35'. I decided on the Elite after casting all the players for two days at a rod show last winter. It won out against some very well respected competition like the GLX, XP, RPLXi, Vector, Helix, TFO, Scott S3s and others.
  11. My second post here and now look what you've done, Shoeman, hit a sore spot with me! There is a lot of talk about looking out for the investor and other standardized answers like that but, the truth be known, those winnings from moving production off-shore usually go directly in the C.E.O.'s pockets. Look at the anual reports of almost any company that sent a large amount of jobs to China or India and you will see HUGE gains in the pay of the top managers. Another interesting feature of all this 'FREE' trade is how the prices of the products once made in the U.S.A. rarely go down to reflect the savings of going off-shore. I try not to buy Chinese goods because I was taught through the years that Commie's are NOT our friends. A look at trade with Cuba bears that concept out. There seems to be a big double standard here. Me and a few old-timers (they seem to be the only people who shake their heads at this trade debacle) were discussing this and I asked what my kids will do for a living. They said the politicians and business people driving this rape of the U.S. weren't worried about future generations because THEIR future family members are VERY comfortable and set for life. Did the rules change? I was taught that greed was one of the seven deadly sins. Bottom line! Ross WAS right!
