  1. Thanks guys it was a hoot catching these. I am going back tonight with casting gear as the tide will be too high and swift to wade. (there's no room to cast from the shore) Bill
  2. Hey, my hand tied Blue Back Herring got me a couple of nice ones. 28" 9.5 pounds and 25" 7 pounds. Bill
  3. Damian, They are beautiful. I know you must be so proud. Ihave two girls myself. (not twins) I was told once that if you have a boy you only have to worry about one boy, if you have a girl you have to worry about ALL the boys. Keep that 20 guage handy, Bill
  4. Well I took my 3 year old daughter fishing today and she nabbed her first bass. It was not on a fly rod but a Zebco Tigger. (you know Tigger from Winnie the Pooh) She saw the cork go under and started to reel. It was a bit much for her so I grabbed the line and helped pull him in while she continued to reel. Dad did OK too with this 3 pounder. Bill
  5. Yeah that has been my experience as well. It also helps to strip enough slack out of the line to straighten the tippet. This causes maximum spinnage. (not to be confused with the green salad ingredient) Well actually today is my day off so I have my 10' Jon in the truck and I am off to Harrison Lake to fish the noon day-twilight part of the day. It is overcast today so I am hoping the lunkers will be adventurous. Bye Bill
  6. Well I keep my honey holes a secret. The techniques won't help you if you can't find my secret spots. Bill
  7. Nobody else was, but I guarantee you that everyone else soon will. That's just too awesome... any suggestion on tippet size and length to make it work best? You know on my small fly rod that I use for gills I don't even have a traditional tippet. I just tie on a 7 foot length of 8 pound mono. Stren Lo Vis Clear. Bill
  8. Balsa poppers. I use the ones you buy already tied because its cheaper in the long run. Bill
  9. Hey I was rippin' it up with the old fly rod yesterday evening. I caught a few nice bass and piles of big bream. I was using a technique I discovered quite by accident a few years ago. I was throwing a small popper with rubber legs. What I did before fishing the fly was to trim the legs on one side of the fly down by a third. When hauling line the inequality in the length of the legs causes the fly to spin in the air thus winding up the tippet. Once the fly lands in the water it just sits there and rolls over and over. It really looks lifelike and the fish can't stand it. Using this method I more than double my catch. Just wondering if anyone else does this? Bill

  11. Howie, That is an awesome Slab. Bill
  12. Jeff, I caught these in a pond in my neighborhood in Mechanicsville VA just off of Meadowbridge Rd. Bill
  13. She was a lot of fun to catch. I caught 6 yesterday and one was 14 1/2 inches long. The one in the picture is 12 1/2. My phone died before I caught the bigger one. But that's okay, I know where they live now so I'll be back. Bill
  14. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by Pastor Bill: Chickahominy Mosquito (click link for more info)
  15. I am hoping to enter next year. Although I am new to tying I have been fly fishing since two months after I moved to Montana. I now live in Virginia and am close to trout waters and live near the James River for smallmouth. I have yet to fish with flies I have tied but I assume it is far more rewarding to catch a nice fish with a fly that one tied personally. So what qualifies a person as a rookie in the contest?
  16. Thanks a bunch, I saw the Avitar settings and I thought that it was an arthritis medication for old-er fly fishermen. Ha... Thanks and uh, obviously it worked.
  17. I can't figure out how to have a picture come up by my posts and responses. I have a cool picture of an 8 pound 9 ounce largemouth I took with a Lefty's Deciever and I want that to come up with my posts. Any help?
  18. I just replaced the vise that came in my first fly tying kit with a Cabela's master vise. It is not fancy but I can tie flies with it pretty well. Its a cam-lock vise which I personally like. I am new to fly tying and now that I am in Virginia I plan to do a lot more fly tying and fly fishing.
  19. Does this fly sink slowly, or is a top water? Have you tried it with lead wire on the hook shank?
  20. I am interested in making my own for two reasons. 1. Looks like fun. 2. Before the supply got short I was wearing out the bass and panfish on this puppy. My biggest bass on it was 6 lbs and change. But having only two left and no supply I am not using them at present. So I'll try your suggestion troutbum2. Bill
  21. It appears to be a 2 part closed cell foam body poured in a mold. Bill
  22. I purchased these flies in Goldsboro North Carolina in 1997 at Coastline Service Center. The manager (Corky) told me the gentleman that tied these was deceased and that is all he knew. It seems to be cast around the hook using a two part closed cell foam. Does anyone have a mold for this or have any clue how to reproduce it? By the way I have been an avid fly fisherman for over 10 years now and am just beginning to learn to tie flies, so excuse me if my request is a simple one.
