  1. Got 'em in the mail today. Great job everyone! :headbang:
  2. Welcome to the site. Pull up a chair (and a vise) and make yourself at home. I, myself, am Ohio's oldest living fly tying beginner.
  3. Welcome to the site. There is a lot here to take in, and a great group of folks to hang out with. Hope to see some of your work (and your son's) soon.
  4. The top one is a material clip - put the big end on your vise barrell, sticking up, small end holds material out of the way while tying. Scoopie thing is a hair stacker, haven't seen one like this for a while.
  5. Welcome to the forum Dave. Lots of stuff to absorb here, and a great bunch of folks. Look forward to seeing some of your work.
  6. Flyfishingwright hit it on the head as far as speed. Unless you do production tying, I wouldn't be too concerned about speed. It's supposed to be relaxing, don't make a race out of it. As you get more experience, The speed will just naturally come. Think quality first, then speed. And yes, you will always have waste, but there are ways to minimize it. If you use small chennile, try putting it on an empty thread spool and using a bobbin. You can do the same with tinsel and the like. Save your feather tips for use as wings and tailing on drys. I use a waste catcher under my vice, and before I empty it each time I rummage thru it for stuff I might be able to use. As for tying becoming a money hole, it's too late. Accept it.
  7. Timenet, can you swing by here and pick me up too? Mid May is fine with me. Anyone else wanna go??
  8. I did a double take when I saw the cabin. My brother built the same cabin in Noerthern Michigan this past summer. Wife and I spent a week there in October. It's in the middle of 40 acres of woods backed by National Forest. It even sits on very similar ground, and looks exactly like his when standing in front of the outhouse. (he has indoor plumbing, but always wanted an outhouse) Very cool.
  9. I'm kinda new to swaps (have entered 8 so far). With my memory, or lack of, I thought I'd better keep track of things. I started a spreadsheet with columns for type of swap, swapmeister, due date, and number of flies to tie. Also added a column for date sent and one for date recieved. Maybe a little overkill, but I am in the engineering field. Go figure
  10. Steeldrifter has a good point about e-bay, you might keep an eye out in the other fishing gear listings also - they might not even know it's fly fishing stuff and list it in the wrong place. Good luck.
  11. That's a cool pattern. I build up the body with deer or elk hair to get the shape, then cover it with 2 or3 layers of thread. (yellow) I also color the legs with marker, then add a small drop of super glue at the bends - makes the legs look like they have joints. I then color the body, but only along the top - the color will bleed down the thread on the sides and make a natural pattern. Hardest part is bending the legs and not using so much heat that you burn thru them. They are really killers for gills around here.
  12. Great job on the tapered body and hackle. Very nice tie of a very effective pattern.
  13. To keep it from stickoing, put a thin film of vasoline on the threads of the jar.
  14. Steeldrifters list is almost the same as mine - I also never leave home without McMurry Ants (black) and assorted beetles. Also carry parachutes (Olive Hare's Ear, and Adams)
  15. You've come to the right place. Look at the patterns, read the posts, and ask away. Welcome.
  16. Welcome. You've got it right, there is a lot of information to be had here, and many,MANY years of fly tying experience throughout the membership. From beginers to guys that have been around since wooden hooks. Don't be bashful about asking questions, we all started in the same place.

    I can sew!

As long as we baring it all, I can sew on my Scout patches (if I have to)None of this goes beyond this forum, right?
  18. "Hello. My name is Chase Creek, and I'm a swap addict" Group seated on folding chairs respond : "Hello, Chase Creek" I'm in with a Birds Stonefly
  19. Mine will be white calf tail / olive deer hair with some sparkle thrown in.
  20. Nothin wrong with those guys, nice tie. Just be careful not to get addicted to swaps; I've lost my truck, my job, my dog.......just kidding. :hyst: Swaps are a great way to improve your skills, so have at it.
  21. Welcome Randy, you'll find lots of stuff your addiction here. Looking forward to seeing some of your work.
  22. Welcome Barracuda. Looking forward to seeing your Clouser tie. I'd never been in a swap before, now have completed 6 of them in the past few months, and looking for more. Be careful, it's addictive.
  23. I second what nomad says. If the problem persists, contact Chris. He's an up front guy, and he'll make it right.
