What is the wheel thing at the back suposed to be called and what does it do?
-
Sorry, should have stated that differently. I don't have a problem tying them, they just don't seem to produce for me. Might be the very swift pocket water I usually fish?I see.
-
I love the look and tying them but don't have a great deal of success with them. More me then the fly.I thought they are one of the most easy flies?
-
I bought some glass beads I thought would work, but they don't allow for the radius of the hook bend ... I can't use them.that is not always the problem of the bead. it may be the hook bend that doesnt allow the bead to around the bend. just try the next size bead
craft seed beads are perfectly acceptable for use on fly patterns. many fly patterns use them. they just dont add any weight
i see

no once it is threaded on the hook take a couple wraps of lead free wire around the hook shank right behind the bead and jam it up inside the bead it will hold it on then tie your flyOk, Any other good Brassie pics?
-
before putting the hook in the vice thread the bead on the hookDo u glue it on?
-
How do u put the bead on and make it stay?
-

Who here likes the "Brassie"? It will be the first fly I'll tie.
Feel free to upload pics of your Brassies.

Sounds like you need to sit down with your buddy John and have him give you some lessons. You'll probably learn more from him one on one in 3 hours than you'll get from half a dozen books.True, Allthough I am from,Hamilton (which is not far from London), he is quite busy at times.
EDIT: He's going to teach me to flyfish sometime.

Rush, did you check out the post that is pinned in this forum? I think there are about ten pages of posts of recommendations for beginner books and other beginner information. Not that you won't get any different answers here, you likely will, just another place to look while waiting for answers here.ok, ill look
btw my name is kirk too
Its a good name.
I named my canoe Enterprise cause my friends called me Captain Kirk. Some years later when I was guiding, I had a Captain's license and was Captain Kirk, officially.
lol my dad named me after captain kirk

I'm going to buy a custom beginner's kit from him in April

thread midges will teach you thread control then move on to a wooly buggar then to a hackled dry fly like an adams or a royal coachman then to a nymph like a hare's earI see, But is John right about waiting before trying it?

My friend "John Ritchie" who is a flytyer/fisher and sells materials tools boocks at home buisness in london ontario canada called "JFM aka John's flytying materials", (id link ya but i dont think im allowed) Said this to me in a email reply to my email
My email to him:
are any of these good for beginners?what ones should i try?--------------------------------------------------------------from: american flytying manual
---------------------------------------------
badger spider
black beetle
black ant
cinnamon ant
picket pin
fledermaus
tups indispensable
little green caddis
beaverpelt
cress bug
mosquito larva
------------------------------------
from: nymph fishing rivers and streams
---------------------------------------------
miracle midge
cream midge
------------------------------------------------------His reply:
I would start withspider ant picket pin mosquitodo a few of each till u get used to handling the toolsanything with a dubbed body can be frustrating at firstso practice learning how to do a dubbing loop till u have that down patthen try some of the fur body fliesleave midges to end they seem easy but u need to have proper size threads and materialsand some experience with the pressure you can use when tying or you will get frustratedwith threads and material breaking and getting the proper proportions- also trout seemto be more picky on midge proportions so u want the them looking right.Cheers John------------------------------------------
So prince fly may be to harrd to start with, I'll ask him sometime.

You don't want to just go tying anything. Some flies will certainly work for a multitude of fish species. But you really need to research where you will be fishing and what you'll encounter as far as species of fish before you can create a basic list of flies. This will be a big step in your flies being productive and your enjoyment of fly tying and fishing.Well it doesent really matter at first to me. I just want to get the hang of fly tying any beginner fly.
