  1. Hi thanks for the reply which river will have alot of smallmouths in it , also whats average smallie size in Tennessee

Ditto on Townsend. This time of year the river will have a lot smallmouths and a few trout in deep holes but a lot tubers midday. The smokies prongs are right there and Cades Cove is a must visit. Ian at R&R taught me a lot about how to get those little prong trout too. AND stay away from Pigeon Forge unless you like traffic jams worse than I Drive in Orlando.

Please post some photos of the trip for us other flat landers.

  2. I've got to second Utyer too. The hard foam floats are great. You can even find different shapes in lure supply catalogs that are used for walleye fishing where they use small hard foam near their bait between the sinker and hook to keep the bait suspended off the bottom. Can't think of the company off hand but there are a variety of sizes and shapes.

For ease of acquisition, the Comal floats are ideal. The list of materials that can be used to make poppers is pretty extensive.

These are size #6 poppers made with Comal hard foam floats painted with acrylic and topcoated with 30 minute cure epoxy.

These are size #6 & #8 poppers made from a block of foam I made by gluing a number of 2mm sheets of foam together.

Kirk would you be able to tell me were you find that multi colored foam that you make these poppers out of . Thanks Banks

  3. Brushable Super Glue

    Sally Hansen

also have some Aileen's Fabric Fusion but haven't tried it yet on a fly. I did patch a pair of jeans, and the stuff seems to be a bit thicker consistency than the other two. Also slow drying.

Also still have some actual head cement from a fly shop but I don't remember the name (I'm 700 miles from home) and haven't used it for a couple of years.

Hey Flafly was at Florida fly fishing symposium and i talked with a guy who was making crease flys and he used fabric fusion as a gloss top coat what a great job it did it was super glossy and still soft im looking forward to useing it on my poppers

  6. I've live here in Central Florida since 1992. I have NEVER seen a fish of any kind eat a love bug.

I was pretty excited about all those bugs when I first saw them. I thought they'd be the "hatch" you speak of. But it didn't pan out.

I have watched tons of dead and dying love bugs float past me without a single ripple investigating them. I've tied flies to look like them and never gotten a hit.

I have to believe they are not "tasty" to the fish and the only hits one might get are fish that haven't experienced one, yet.

WOW Mike thats kinda strange tell you why every morning I clean 4 pools and when the love bugs are bad I screen up hundreds of them every mourning then I walk to the lake 10feet away and shake them into the lake and i sit and watch a feeding frenzy of pan fish till everyone of them is gone , I do this at 4 pools and 4 different lakes every morning you wouldnt think panfish would eat hundreds of them if they didnt like them , but tell you what im gonna do when they swarm next time ill post a video for you

  7. When I read your title, I was thinking about large mayflies I had seen in FL. Hex I believe they are. I would have never guessed.

I've seen a similar bug here in MD, but don't believe it's the same bug. Never witnessed that type of hatch with them either. Took a look on Google Images too! Man, not sure I would want to see them like that! I've seen a lot of bugs on a windshield too. When the Cicadas are out they get a lot of notice but never anything like that! blink.png

Learned something new here! I could see the panfish going wild over them.

Your flies are pretty cool! Let us know how they work for you! smile.png

Yes there a mess on cars they will take the paint off if you dont get them off , and they love white they swarm white houses , white trucks, , and some days there that bad you could end up eating a few

  8. If you have ever been in Florida when these hatch you know that there are swarms of thousands of these bugs and i believe that they hatch twice a year and the pan fish gobble them up as soon as they hit the water. This bug is the notorious LOVE BUG the love bug got its name because when the mate they get attached to each other and that's the way they fly around. So i decided to make Zach's articulated LOVE BUG i made it articulated so the rear love bug dangles behind the front one as they do naturally.

Any feedback or comments would be appreciated. One picture has swiss straw wings , others just foam didnt decide which I like the best

  9. I use a Gary Krebs jig to shape my poppers. Also, use the softest, spongy flip flops you can find. Some of the stiffer ones are so dense that they barely float.

I DONT UNDERSTAND , IS THIS A ADVERTISEMENT TO SELL YOUR JIG SET , i just use a large sissors , mine are not shaped like these and it takes me about 8 seconds to cut out a popper , and i can make it any tone or color i want , But these look nice to , I dont knotch them for the hook either , I just push bodkin through it and push hook through no knotch

  10. Very nice. Definitely the best I've seen posted. Guess I'll have to give them another try. I've just never found flip flops with the colors I like to use. Maybe the $1 stores or the craft stores are having a summer clearance sale. Something to do this weekend besides fish.

Tube fly poppers- I've tied up a few using the soft foam popper bodies, mainly pencil poppers or large salt water and bass poppers and I like the edge the sliding body gives me when fighting a fish. I must admit I use treble hooks with them. I also tie them on long articulated shanks with treble hooks.

The flip flop foam would be good for a variation on "Bob's Banger", which if you're not familiar with it, is a foam cylinder with a hole drilled or burned through the center of it to slide the line through with a teaser fly of buck tail, feathers or long flash attached to the line.

Are family dollar has them 99 cents pair I buy the biggest size i can get in yellow , black , grey , green , the grey is very lite I can make that one almost any color with permanent marker coat of clear nail polish , alot of you nail polishes now have the glitter right in them very easy to make them have alittle flash to
