  1. I have 2 reels and 3 lines that are not in their original boxes. I am having problems identifying what lines I have; I know I have a WF5F, a FIPS Euro Nymph#2-5 and a WF5I (Rio Lake Series Sub-surface). All are freshwater, and all are Rio products. How do you identify the lines once they are on a reel? Some kind of tag? Suggestions would greatly appreciated.
  2. Thanks Mike... that's exactly what I was looking for...
  3. I have a Minn Kota Endura trolling motor that I am going to mount on the rear of my Classic Accessories Wilderness inflatable pontoon boat. My question is: if I mount the transducer on top of the actual motor, is the prop wash going to affect the reading directly below the motor?
  4. Thanks everybody for your comments! I happen to be reading Devin Olsen's Tactical Fly Fishing now, and got the "official" answer! It doesn't get any better than that! Thanks Fin-Ite 34 for the URL... SD
  5. I'm trying to get into Euro nymph fishing for the coming season and have a question regarding jig hooks. Do they have to be tied upside down, so when they are dragged along the bottom, the fly is right-side up, or doesn't it make any difference.
  6. SilverCreek: I tend to agree with what you are saying; since I have some time before fishing opens here in Spokane, WA, I am going to save my money and get the best 2-3 weight rod I can afford... I will be sure to let you know how it went with the 5 wt also. Thank all of your for the valuable input; all of it makes sense and gives me direction as to what I need to do. Nothing worse than doing something without the education needed to make it succeed. SpokaneDude
  7. Thanks everybody... saved me $300 this year, and I particularly like the idea of giving it a try... never thought of that! Spokane Dude
  8. Mikechell: you're kidding, of course?! The reason I ask is because the Scott is only 9', and the Redington is 11'; I have read that you should/must have a long rod...
  9. Was hoping to purchase a new Redington Hydrogen 3 wt nymph rod, but I was thinking I might be able to use my current rod for Euro nymphing; Current rod is a Scott A4905 9'0" Med/Fast 5 wt; I wanted to use a RIO Euro Nymph fly line paired with a RIO Euro Nymph tapered leader. Will this work until I can get the Redington nymph rod?
  10. flytire: great suggestion... I would never have thought of that... thank you!
  11. Is there any reason why I can't tie any nymph pattern on a jig hook?
  12. Joe: thanks for the response; I'm just getting started nymph fishing, and am happy to hear that my choice of rods was a good one! As far as the reel, I found the Lamson on sale at $158 off regular price, and since I already have "history" with the Lamson brand, that is what I decided to purchase. Now, I need to put it all together and learn how to fish using the "high stick method"; here in Spokane, WA, we are fortunate to have the Spokane River go through downtown and it offers many places to fish without driving for hours. Thanks again for the input... Rolf (Spokane Dude)
  13. Thank you all for responding; I have decided to go with the Lamson Micra 5 Litespeed... mainly because I already have a Lamson Guru II and really like it.
  14. I'm in the process of creating an outfit for nymphing; as such, I have already picked the rod (Cortland Competition Nymph Fly rod, 10"5 3 wt) and looking at these reels: the Lamson Micra 5 Litespeed 1.5 vs the Ross Animas, also a 1.5. I would be interested in your comments, mainly as to which is a better reel, given the price point is almost the same. Thanks...
  15. Here are some of the flies I have tied; they are not necessarily "pretty" but I'm sure they will catch fish... https://pasteboard.co/HnsbNLi.jpg https://pasteboard.co/HnsgReI.jpg https://pasteboard.co/Hnsh5ed.jpg https://pasteboard.co/Hnsjvsi.jpg
  16. flytire: I'll see what I can do about showing some of my flies; I only have my iPhone, so let me give it a try... As for Bob Marriott's, for personal reasons I don't purchase from them anymore, choosing to use Pacific Fly Fishers instead... UPDATE: a quick search shows that Bob Marriott's is the ONLY place that I can find the templates, so I guess I'll have to swallow my pride and purchase it from them... oh, well, that's life! :-} SD
  17. PlanetTrout: Wapsi doesn't make the Life Cycle Templates anymore... BUMMER! I have a saved search in eBay for any that come up available! retrocarp: yes, it's a personal twitch of mine... I try to make my flies as realistic as possible, even going as far as using the original pattern for such as the Adams... Thanks again everybody for your comments... lots of "food for thought"..., :-} SD
  18. flytire: interesting... I'll have to give it a try... thank you for the info... SD
  19. Anybody have a pair of Life Cycle Caddis Wings they want to part with ($)... Wapsi no longer makes them... SD
  20. I have tried the Reel Wings Sedge Small, but I really have a hard time with fat fingers getting the wing positioned, cutting the V in the tab only made things worse. So I thought would look for realistic alternatives. Came across River Road Creations, and J Son Caddis wing burners which seem to be a viable alternative. I might be missing something here, but it seems the River Road product only cuts foam material... I have NEVER heard of, or seen foam wings on a caddis fly... am I missing something? Any suggestions or recommendations? I want to make the flies as realistic as possible with regard to the wings. SD
  21. Dette fly shop on the East Coast has them, packaged by Veniard...
  22. Well, I certainly understand that feeling (been there, done that!)... I am retired, and each month I have a small amount left over after the bills are paid that I can use for "whatever"... otherwise, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the perks of fly tying and fishing! :-}
  23. Yep it is, but the TMC Magnetic bobbin is not only more expensive, but very difficult to change spools and get it to work correctly (thread tension) without a whole lot of fussing around with it...
  24. I understand this was last year's topic, but I wanted to add my 2 cents! I have tried them all, from cheapo's, to Rite, Stonefo and Tiemco, and I had problems with all of them. I finally got a Smhaen, and once I got used to it, I really like it... sorry I didn't get it a long time ago... SD
