How to use the Scientific Angler's fly line cleaning pad
SpokaneDude replied to SpokaneDude's topic in Beginner's Corner
Hi Brian... yes, I used it dry, and had the same results that you had... the line sank faster and deeper than before, which really irritated me. So, now I'll use it for the rest of the season and then get Rio line in the spring. I'm going to write to SA and tell them what happened. Thanks for responding. SD -
How to use the Scientific Angler's fly line cleaning pad

Thank you so much... I went to their website but didn't find the video... told me exactly what I needed to know... too bad the lame instructions that come with the package don't give more detail. Thanks again... -
Where is the "covert feather" on the top of a duck wing?
SpokaneDude replied to SpokaneDude's topic in Beginner's Corner
Thank you both... exactly what I needed to see... -
Hi everybody... I'm trying to tie a Wet/Dry fly; it calls for "covert feather" taken from the top of a duck or coot wing. I normally get all of my materials from Marriott's FlyFishing Shop in Fullerton, CA by mail, but they have about a dozen different types of duck feathers and I'm at a loss as to which feather to purchase. My question is: which feather and what exactly does the "covert feather" look like on the duck feather? (an image would really, really be appreciated) Thanks...

Does anybody use a tungsten bead on the Girdle Bug? I saw it in an online article (http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104744), and having never heard of that coupled with a lead wrap, thought it might be too much.

UTC thread comes with a small, thin disk that fits into one end of the spool to keep the thread from unraveling. I have contacted Wapsi asking to purchase some of the "keepers", but they don't sell to anyone other than brick and mortar stores. The new ones are very thin which means I don't have to continually adjust the tension on my bobbin. Does anyone know where I can find some of these?

Thank you both...

So it should be used "flat" and not wound like yarn? That would make sense to me...

FlatsRoamer: good idea! original question updated with images.

Hello everybody... I am trying to tie a Dave's Hopper which uses yellow McFlylon. My problem is that the "yarn" becomes unraveled to the point where its almost unusable and I have to get a new piece. Can anybody give me some guidance as to how to easily use McFlylon? I've tried twisting it, but doesn't seem to hold the twist. Any secrets? Thanks... SpokaneDude

Thanks everyone... I kinda figured that out, but being a noob, wasn't sure if there were other methods. SD

Noob here... I have found a caddis larva pattern that I really like; however, it uses Antron yarn, which in itself is no problem, but when I go to wrap it around the hook, I have "flat" places and places where the yarn looks like a thick piece of thread. My question is: is there a technique for using this yarn so it's all flat or all thick? Should I twist the yarn first to make it tighter? Thank you... SD

Anybody know where I can pick up some magnetic pads similar to the TMC magnetic pads that come with TMC hooks?
-
Thanks guys... a dubbing loop it will be... (don't know why I didn't think of that) :-}

I found a pattern for a maggot; so I started winding the herl around the hook and it continuously breaks... is this normal, or are my fat fingers causing problems? Anybody have any hints or suggestions for working with this fragile herl?

Does anybody know what is being used on this fly?

Does anybody know what is being used on this fly?
SpokaneDude replied to SpokaneDude's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
When you "burn" white chenille, does the end turn black? That is kind of what I'm looking for; my wife says nylon or polyester does that... -
I found this site which shows how to tie an almost lifelike maggot... I tried to see if I could determine what kind of nylon or polyester yarn is being used for the body... it's not obvious to me and I don't want to buy a bunch of yarn that I can't use... any ideas?

Great... thank you very much...

Do you use the same brand?

Hi everybody... I'm trying to tie Pat's Rubberlegs, but have run into issues using Life Flex... first of all, when I got it out of the package, it was all curled up and difficult to work with, especially when trying to create an antenna. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to straighten it out? or at least remove some of the curl?

What part of pheasant feathers have the longest barbs
SpokaneDude replied to SpokaneDude's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Any specific brand? I buy most (if not all) of my stuff from Bob Marriott's Fly Shop, but I have to know what to ask for...
