Thanks all for the input. I'm going to try deer hair for the wing. I do use synthetic dubbing for this particular fly and very sparce as the fly I'm imitating is small bodied. I am using goose biots for the tail. And the fish are quite particular at the moment due to the hatch. Thanks again for the input everyone. Much appreciated

I'll give it a try. Thank you.

One of our local waters is currently producing a may fly hatch. The fish will only take dry fly imitations of the fly. I made several but they are sinking. I've waxed the thread, used turkey points for wings, and grizzly for the collar. I use silver French tinsel for the rib and black dubbing for the body. I believe the dubbing is causing the fly to sink. I have squirrel tail, peacock heral, and bucktail that I could substitute for the dubbing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have the pattern down but I tie mostly wet flies and dry flies are fairly new to me.

Thx for the info. My deer are all Late November deer as are my elk. In other words, long thick hair with long guard hairs, which I have to assume would be the tips. Generally, I only take hair from the belly, neck, and rump. However, I opted for a whole hide this last go round. The illustration will help tremendously. Thank you

Thank you for the replies. How would one bleach the feathers prior to dying? Hydrogen peroxide perhaps? Or is there something better to use? I want a dark blue batch for steelhead fishing this fall.

Thank you for the reply. Koolaid works well on bucktail, squirrel tail, and deer hide. I didn't think of trying it on feathers.

Well thank you. How would someone go about dying it. Natural is nice but I'd like to have other colors as well.

I have a complete elk hide and deer hide. I typically cut sections of deer hide and cure with borax. I now have elk to use as well. Can elk and deer be used interchangeably? I have two elk manes too. The hair is quite long and coarse. What applications could I use the elk main in? And will it take color like the deer hide. After I cure the deer hide I use koolaid to dye the hide. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm an avid outdoorsman. I have access to different natural materials for tying flies. I recently obtained a skin from a turkey. I found many different types of feathers I think can be used in place of maribou. Has anyone ever tried using turkey down? And can it be dyed? If so, how.
