  1. Sorry if this post is in the wrong place, I know the "destinations" forum used to be a good place to ask trip questions. My wife and I are going camping at the Tahquamenon S.P. in Michigan's UP and are trying to find some fly fishing for trout in the area. Anybody been there or somewhere near that they might recommend instead...keep in mind this is a camping trip for us, not a fishing trip for me. But, of course I've got to take advantage of the opportunity at least one day.
  2. I saw that you all had a nice little dialogue going under the fly pattern database post within this forum, so I didn't want to interrupt it. I've jsut been having a lot of general trouble finding specific flies on the pattern database. They're basic patterns usually. The search within the database seems difficult to perform. I know the other post there mentioned that you're working on revamping it, but I was just curious to what extent. Will I be able to simply type in a pattern (i.e. adams dry) and it'll just come up? Thanks
  3. for as little as I've fished, I might have to agree with a bead head pheasant tail
  4. I'm all for this kind of makeshift tool. Any other cheap fixes for basic tools, materials? links?
  5. I find a lot of nymph patterns calling for turkey or goose biots. What exactly are biots (from what part of the animal do they come?) and is there a replacement for them?
  6. Not to bombard the forum with new topics, but I've got a lot stirring about fly fishing questions. Just yesterday me and a buddy went up to the Chagrin River (Lake Erie tributary) to go for some steelhead. It seemed to me that the fish were hunkered down and the current was pretty quick. I think the water level was a little high, but even so, I was having trouble getting some flies (wooly buggers, mickey finn) to get a little deeper in the water. Does anyone have suggestions for rigs or tying to get the flies in a little deeper? Thanks.
  7. Hey all! I'm a beginning fly tyer and have gotten a couple of patterns down with some resemblance to the picture I look at. I'm really strugling with muddler patterns. I don't have anyone around who knows how to tie, so I'm restricted to explanations in print. I have a couple of problems. First, when I look at a professionally tied pattern, it seems that the deer hair collar is quite thin while the head has a lot of deer hair. How do you get it like this. Also, I struggle to clip the head with consistency (you don't do this before you tie it in do you?). Any tips would help. Thanks!
