  1. I have tried them using something called Wing'nFlash...I read the instruction on Mr.Skok's website, but as with most things,I am a better SEE and do guy, than READ and do!!!!
  2. Anyone know where one might be able to view a video,on how to tie Dave Skok's Mushmouth pattern?? Sulphernut
  3. Hey Roy! Is that Partridge hook the one you are using to tie your Sulpher/Klinkhammer?? I like the way this hook bends,as opposed to others I have seen recommended for tying this style. I am looking at an ad for it right now in an Angler's Workshop flyer I got just before Christmas. Model#15BNX...$4.95 for 25 is IMHO a pretty fair price for a Partridge hook!! Sulphernut
  4. Had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. Jorgensen about 30 years ago,at a fly shop in Cold Spring NY. We actually sat down and tied a fly or two together. He was the guy who showed me how to fold a hackle! He was quite a character. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. Sulphernut
  5. The article I was reading had the author using it in place of epoxy,or clear silicone (such as in Popovic's sili-clone series) A bit alarming that flyingcrayfish found it to be so viscous. I will still grab some and try it out...I am interested in the fact that it's supposed to be so much clearer than "clear" silicone.
  6. Griffith's Gnat Letort Cricket Tan Caddis Adult Bead Head Hare's Ear Yellow Maribou Streamer Trico Spinner / and of course,my beloved Sulpher,in every variation known to the modern fly tying world!!! I'm sure I could come up with one or two more, but these are the ones I would really feel naked without! Sulphernut
  7. Hey to all!!! Thanks for the input!!! Sulphernut
  8. The add claims extremely low prices on some name-brand merchandise...Was looking to here from anyone who may have ordered from them...??? Sulphernut
  9. Anyone ever use a product called Lexel?? Google it and check out the website: Shascoesealants Not available just anywhere, but they have a "where to buy" button on the site. I've GOT to get me some!! Eric
  10. Hello to all!!!! Not one negative reply!!! I must say,I am convinced. I was always pretty sure that someday, someone would come out with a line of QUALITY rods, popularly priced! Not to slight any of the users of Sage, Thomas & Thomas,or Winston addicts, but it has always seemed to me,that there is no good reason for a stick of grahite and it's fittings,to cost $600.00 to $800.00!!! A fine reel,is a bit easier for me to swallow, but again, $500.00 to $800.00 for what is essentially a spool on an axle is hard to justify! When you look at what potential hazards there are to befall equipment (if you are actually doing some FISHING with them!) it would scare me to pick one of these up,let alone swish it around in the air!! Just my most humble opinion here!!! Thanks for all of the input!! It makes the decision easier to make. PS: I was remiss to not mention Reddington, who was a couple of years in front of TFO!!!
  11. Thanks Steelie!!! That's pretty much what I was hoping to hear!!! Sulphernut
  12. Never saw,or used them, but from the pictute,I would say that you probably cut them into individual legs, and tie them on. I'd be interested to know how heavy/light they are. Good luck with'em!!
  13. I am looking into buying or building a new 10 weight rod. I have had my eye on the TFO series, being marketedbyLefty Kreh. I was wondering if any of you had one,or know anyone who does, and might be interested in giving me a little feedback on what you think of it. I am attracted by the price, and the fact that I consider Lefty Kreh to be someone who's word you could take at face value....AND the fact that you can get them in a kit ! ( I was thinking of getting a kit,and substituting components if/as I saw fit)
  14. / Not positive, but I beleive it helps "set" the color....less apt to fade or rinse out...??
  15. So Saturday the 23rd, the wife and I are sitting around, watching the tube. I turned on an episode of "Guide House- Montauk" that I had Tivo'ed. I happened to mention one of the guides on the show,as a fellow I would like to wet a line with. About an hour later, the phone rings, and who is on the other end,but Captain Brendan McCarthy!!!! Next thing you know,I get a gift certificate via e-mail for a day on his boat!!! Like I said....What a Wife!!!! Sulphernut :yahoo:
  16. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this: I have recently been experimenting with securing a parachute hackle with CA (super) glue,as opposed to a whip finish...Not so much cuz it's any easier to do...it is in fact a bit more time consuming....but it IS neater! I have not yet had the chance to fish with any of these flies. I was just wondering if anyone out there has any opinions,on durability. ( I tend to get a little "agressive" with my casting stroke at times, you see!!) Sulphernut
  17. WOW!!! If I didn't know better,I'd say that that was the pattern I came up with on my own, several years ago!! You describe it almost to a tee!! ( I went so far as to put knotted pheasant legs on mine!! ) Redwings hit it right on the head with the feather prep tecnique. The only thing I do alittle differently,is wait 'til the cement sets JUST A BIT,and draw the feather between my thumb and finger to shape it. It also "presses" the goop into the small air spaces between the feather barbs, and assures that there isn't too much cement actually "encasing" the feather. AI'm a bit busy, what with holiday prep and all,but will try to post a pic.
  18. JJD.....These look almost perfect!!! Thanks for the lead!!! ......Sulphernut
  19. OK....It's unanimous!!....Sparser is better!! I also strongly agree with greysquirrel, regarding tying down the "tail" portion, almost all the way up to the eye....it makes a superb underbody for the mylar tinsel. PS: If you have never used one of these patterns to fish with, you are in for a treat! Deceptively plain looking in the hand, they are incredibly lifelike in the water...IF YOU TIE THEM SPARSE ENOUGH!!! Tight Threads!! Sulphernut
  20. I had the same problem several years ago...I bought some latex specifically marketed for fly tying. This was back when Raleigh Boaze was just introducing it to the fly tying public. I had several of the flies deteriorate in the flybox,in what I thought was a pretty short amount of time. I haven't used it at all since then. I'd be curious to know if in the interim,it has been reformulated,to be a bit more stable...?? ( I didn't have a whole lot of fun cutting little strips of the stuff from a sheet either...probably another reason I haven't used it since!!)
  21. I saw your picture...For a first effort,it is MUCH better than adequate!!! It might be a testament to how much more,(and better!) teaching materials are around,as opposed to when I tied my first fly, back in '67!!! I bought a few things from Cabelas,I beleive, and a little local fly shop, long since closed up. One night,I swiped a spool of sewing thread from my mom's kit,an old stub of a candle (for wax!) and went to the basement. I took the only hook I had,a size #6 Eagle Claw Baitholder, and mashed down the baitholder barbs. (Good practice for the future, looking back on it!) Clamping the hook in my fathers bench vise, I wrapped a grey spun fur body, ribbed it with the tying thread, and turned on a grossly oversized claret neck hackle!!! It was a horrid looking thing, but I could have not been more thrilled! I was totally hooked!! Your fly,is representative of what it took me 2 or 3 YEARS to attain. ( And back then,I had alot of time to practice!!) Keep up the good work, and beware...this gets addicting FAST!!! Sulphernut
  22. Gotta put my 2 cents in here!! I too am very happy with the rapid turnaround of J.Stockard!! I will be using them often!! I found a place that is not quite so quick (perhaps because they are located in Oregon) but have a couple of unique and SWEET deals ( entire rabbit skins,pre-cut into Zonker strips for $10.95 ea) and free shipping on any order over $20.00. They are called either "The Fly Fishing Shop,or Fly fish USA.. (don't have the link handy)
  23. Thought I'd weigh in here quickly...I've been tying with nothing but Dyna-King vises for that past 10 years....First had the Professional, and traded up to the full sized Barracuda. I would recommend either vise, with no reservations whatsoever. Had the midge jaws with the first vise, but they went with the trade-in...Will have them for the "Barra" on 12/25/06!!! While not absolutely necessary, the DO make it more pleasurable working on the wee stuff!!!
  24. I too, would be interested to know about this!
