Fly Tying

What fly can I tie to start?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I really want to tie something basic and commonly used. I have a few materials

Hooks:

Orvis #8 2xLong said to be used in Wet Flies, Standard patterns and Muddlers.

TMC 2457 Shrimp & Caddis pupa. 2xShort 2x Heavy , bronze.

Feathers:

Orange marabou feathers

Brown Marabou feathers

Hackle feathers ( brown color )

Chenille:

Dark Green

Yellow

Ice light green

I also have some caddis bead heads in black 1/8'' size, ( they go along nicely with my #14 TMC 2457 )

I also have thread, vise, Hackle Plier... etc.

So , what do you guys think I could start tying ? I was thinking on some basic nymph patterns, but I don't know, its very very hard and expensive to get materials here in CHile ( specially for a Student like me )

So any ideas ? :)

Thanks!!!

Use the 2x long hooks in size 8, the dark green chinelle, brown marabou and brown hackle to tie up some wolly buggers.

There are many step by step patterns for wolly buggers, and even some videos to teach you how to tie them. Find the pattern online and give it a go.

Best of luck,

Phil

Hi guys thanks for your advice :), I started tying some buggers and stuff , but damn my hackles are too big for my hook size :( lol , and I don't have enough money to buy other smaller hackles... so I will see what can I do.

Today a friend gave me some deerhair and some wire to add some weight to the fly :)
