Old Hat 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by Old Hat: Crippled Wing Soft Hackle
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 This is a cross-over style that works very well for me. It is a wet but fishes best using dry fly methods. It rides in the surface film. In faster water I will grease the wing for a little more flotation.
letumgo 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 Lovely soft hackle fly, Old Hat. I love the look of the wood duck wing. This gives me a perfect excuse to try out my new ceramic bobbin for silk thread. :headbang:
Soft-hackle 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 Sounds like a winning technique and fly to use for it. Good tying, Old Hat. Mark

KevCompton 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 Hi OldHat, Great pattern idea! Like the way you keep a slender body by using a tag-end rib. Kevin
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 Thanks for the comments. I use this specific color pattern for calibeatis hatches. Peter, I have also used cdc and it works well also like you said. It is good if you need a little more flotation out of the fly. It does cause it to ride a bit different. A little more like a lively emerging adult fly and less like a dying sunken insect. I have also played with snowshoe hare's foot. The snowshoe and cdc does give it a little bulkier profile also. It's all a matter of what I'm trying to mimic.
