Interesting tie, definitely would require a larger whip finish tool or long fingers.

What is the thought behind tying an emerger this way, or was it just to do it?

That simple little emerger was tough enough

Basically a para adam

You need:

Dry fly hook size 14-22

grizzly hackle

grey dubbing

take your hook and place it upside down in the vice or sideways, wrap thread onto the curve of the hook, take some grizzly hackle fibers and tie them on the bend. The take another piece of grizzly hackle and tie that on parachute style wrap it on the curve just like a para adams. Now go towards the eye of the hook and tie in some more grizzly fibers as a tail. Dub your body and whip finish. The point of the hook should be where the wing and hackle are. The wing from the first stel should be pointing up
