hackle

Recommended Posts

Just bought my first dry fly hackle cape,a metz grade 2 cape. Tied a few flies and it was good, but being the first time using dry fly hackle was wondering if anyone had any tips on winding hackle.

thanks

tight wraps making sure not to mat down any hackle fibers from previous wrap. another good tool for you to have would be a hackle gauge, that will tell you how long the hackle fibers should be for the size hook you use.

Definately wrap them slow and not overlapping each other. I use a rotary vide which I find makes easier wrapping. Also, don't waste your left over hackle, it's too expensive if you buy good ones.

Trim butt ends of hackle to about 1/8 inch,so your thread will grasp the hackles better, therefore reducing slippage.tie hackles in so-shiny side of hackle is facing you with the butt ends pointing toward the hook eye.And as a general rule, three wraps behind the wings and two in front.

hope this helps
