Floyd 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2011 Tie thread on needle as shown. Place end of thread in material holder. Place foam on top and bottom of needle. Place mono eye between foam and tie foam down forming segment. Repeat this until you have four segments. Do a couple of whip finish or half hitches to hold thread in place. Cut thread leaving a couple of inches of thread. Remove tail from needle. Take thread that was in material holder and pull slack out of it. Trim to shape. Place hook in vice and tie on eyes. Wrap thread to back of hook. Tie on tail and make sure to tie down the two pieces of thread. Cut excess thread. Tie on foam as shown. Tie on deer hair as shown. Divide hair and pull foam through hair and tie down. Pull foam over eyes and tie down. Finish head. Pull hair forward and shape wings.
letumgo 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2011 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Terrific tutorial, Floyd. I always enjoy your foam flies. I have only recently started tying extended body foam flies. Your tutorial is very helpful in understanding the steps needed to create the beautiful segmentation. There will be a few of these in my smallmouth bass fly box this summer. :headbang:

letumgo 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Floyd - I am happy to report that your Royal Spinner fly works great! Here is one of the size 6 versions you sent me, just after I tyed it on for it's initial field test. Here is a beautiful bass I caught with this fly this morning. I think the little eyes give this fly so much life. Here is the well-chewed version after the bass was released. Thanks again! Ray "letumgo"
FrequentTyer 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2011 Thanks for a great pattern and tutorial! I tried one of these that I received in the Bluegill Invitational swap this weekend and it worked beautifully! The really neat thing about this pattern is that you can wiggle the rod tip and the extended foam body will vibrate and make little ripples on the water. the bluegills couldn't resist. the only problem I had was that most of the the strikes from the little guys were short (no big bass wanted to play that day). I am going to try and tie some smaller sizes to remedy this. Mike.
