  1. Hey everyone, Have you ever heard of or tied with neptune fly tying hooks? Thanks
  2. Frank, Do you use this method for flies in size 10 and 12? I will give this a shot later. Also are you heading to saen thursday? Phil
  3. Jconns, It depends where you are fishing. What rivers/waters are you planning on fishing. I find chartreuse bead head caddis nymphs productive on certain rivers. I am told clouser minnows are productive but I have never caught anything on them. Have a couple wolly buggers in both black and olive. Usually this time of year people fish really small (18-22) black flies or black silver tips. I will post a photo of my fly boxes so you can have a look. Phil
  4. Thanks Futzer, I always precut my wings no matter the material. I anchor the wing in with a few wraps and then do one behind the wing and finish in front. I do not put anything on the butt ends prior to whip finishing. I am always open to honing my techniques. Futzer can you do that tutorial on a salmon fly in size 8 or 10. I would appreciate those sizes because those are the sizes I tie and fish. thanks a lot you rock, Phil
  5. I have to ask, Have you caught anything with the allys shrimp pattern? I have always thought it to be too large to throw. Im in Mount Pearl and go to MUN.
  6. Hey Jcons, Very nice flies. In my opinion they are great. I personally like to have as small of a head on my flies as possible. I find when using squirrel tail you have to compromise with the size of the head because it is a very slippery material, i.e. you can pull the wing out of the flies if they are not tied in enough. I always give my wings a very tight pull after I have it tied in. If I pull it out because it isnt tied in well enough I can unwrap and tie it back in again. I do think your head on the highlander varient is a little big for my taste but I am sure that wing is locked in there solidly. Oregon Midge has provided a very nice example of a body. He is one heck of a tier! For my fishing flies I like them to be fairly sparse and therefore I do not build up much of a body. What I do it start at the loop and work back always making sure my thread is flat and side by side with the last wrap. When I tie in materials I only use 2-4 wraps and do not make bumps while doing this. so when I move the thread up the head of the fly to tie in the floss the body is very flat. For my fishing flies I do not burnish the body, but it wouldn't hurt. Anyways, where about are you located on the rock? Im on the Avalon. There are a few other islanders on this site. All the best, Phil
  7. Mustad has standardized their hook sizes. Their classic hooks are not universally comparable when you look at the description. Now with the signature series the hooks are univerally standard when it comes to the description. This will prove to be superior but you have to stop referencing from the old hooks. I hope this helps. Phil
  8. I fall right in the middle. I tie flies to fill my boxes and to have a wide range of patterns for fishing. So I do tie to fish but since there are so many patterns and options that I will always be tying to get "just enough" consequently that involves tying in bulk. Phil
  9. Thanks im going to get in contact with him, from all of your opinions I cannot go wrong. Phil
  10. Hello everyone, I am looking for deer hair for spinning bombers. I am looking at wapsi premo long patches but I am unknown with this hair, and if it is decent for spinning. If you know a good source id be happy to know. thanks phil
  11. Nice artur!! I love this fly. I tie mine a bit sparser. A lovely fly to have in any box Phil
  12. Hey, No problem Tanya. How about you post a photo of the tied fly. It would be great to see the finished fly. If there are any other flies you need a recipe for just let us know. Phil
  13. Hey Tanya, I have one here for a Silver Monkey. tag - oval silver tinsel tail - gp crest butt - black ostrich herl rib - oval silver body- flat silver throat - grizzly wing - greyish mottled monkey hair over strands of florescent yellow and green floss shoulder - jungle cock head - black I am sure you can sub a grey fox fur for the monkey. Or if you are really pressed grey squirrel tail. Also I am sure you can change the body colours to make other "monkey" patterns. Phil
  14. start every fly with an even layer of flat thread. This will pay off with durable and beautiful flies.
  15. Im very jealous. With a skill level like that, she deserves to be very proud of herself. I can only imagine the things she will end up doing. Give her a highfive that is one deadly fly. Fantastic
  16. haha, Bud I think you are right.... I suppose I will have to find myself a hobby. Do you reckon fishing is any good? thanks bud, Phil
  17. Thank you for the kind words. The RW box was a birthday gift this past may. And the flies are a result of the extra time I have during my winters break. So far I have about 50 flies tied up for the box. It may come that this box ill hold only 8's I am unsure as of now. But I aim to have 10's and 12's in my vest somewhere also. Phil
  18. Thanks Frank, I was trying to remember that number. You mentioned those to me once before. Thanks
  19. Thanks guys, I got this box as a birthday gift back in may. I will toss in some undertakers, cossebooms and some of those orange hackle flies Jens. That humber magic looks like a great fly Jens. Wonderfully tied may I add. Salmo: I have some coosebooms tied up in a fly wallet my girlfriend bought me, but those are mostly in size 6. What hook did you tie that on and what is the wing material? Thanks guys, Phil
  20. Good idea Jens! I forgot about the dutot BC, but I don't know the pattern for the Humber magic. Would you mind posting the pattern or a picture? I need to add some flies with orange hackle in them, but I seemed to misplace my orange hen back ill have to head to the fly shop and grab some. As for rivers I like to fish the salmonier when it isnt too populated with people fishing. Indian river, exploits and some smaller rivers in central NL. phil
  21. Hey guys, Since there has been some interest in Newfoundland Flies here I decided to post a few photos of a project I am undertaking. I am tying a new box of flies for this coming season. I have had this box since May but I have not used it. I am tying up flies in size 8 at the moment on Daiichi Bob Veverka salmon hooks. On the other two pages I will tie up flies in sizes 10 and 12. As you can see I am only about 35 flies into the box so far. Nevertheless any questions are welcome about patterns or anything else. This will not be my only box I will also have some flies in size 6 and bugs/bombers in various colour. I am looking for some good hooks in sizes 10 and 12 Thanks Phil
  22. Hey Jens, Yes the Salmonier is the most populated river during the season. But there are other rivers that produce decent fish. If you are ever out in central Newfoundland again, near the Gambo, there are some great rivers only a short drive from there. My great uncle fishes the Exploits river almost every day of the season, as it is only a few minutes from his house. Still I do believe that the Humber produces some of the largest fish and it holds its reputation for a reason. I live on the Avalon and plan on fishing it a little harder this season. Although my father mentioned that we might get up to Labrador for a fishing trip.... my fingers are crossed. Phil
  23. Woahhhh I feel good! Nice fly
