  1. A simple trick I have found that is MENTIONED is that you should NOT cut off all the ends or roots of the feathers tied to the head. This will be where you mount the bronze mallard. AFTER mounting the bronze, cut the roots off. The roots of the feather will hold the bronze in place as you tie them in. It's a simple trick but only mentioned in books and demonstrations. Bill
  2. Tying classes are very helpfull. I tied for about 3 months before the class. I learned by following the Skip Morris book Tying Nymphs. Only after taking the class did the tying instructions make sense. Now I teach the basic course through Atlantic Salmon Flys (married wing ect...) and I still learn new things that make tying easier and better. Remember that the Instructor is trying to make it easy and it's tough to teach the basics because all the Information the instructor knows and how long it takes to pass that on to students. Most of all practice makes tying easier and easier. A tyier needs to keep an open mind as there is so much to learn. Most of the information the Instructor is passing was passed on to Him/Her by someone else. Most instructors are now inventing the patterns. Change up the colors and materials and Keep some of the flys that You tied. Stick them away for safe keeping for a year and revisit them after You have tied for a while. You will notice how much better You tie and how hard it was at first. Good luck and Happy tying.....AND Fishing! Bill
