Obi, good luck with your decision.

I dont argue the fact of just using a tool, It just shocked me as to the wild bidding for something in the end just does a simple job. Trust me i would love to have a law vise but in no reality would i ever spend such a price. Now if i were buying new directly from law i
might consider higher than the original retail. I still found the final bid total amazing. Perhaps 4 times the original sale price.

I just sat and watched someone spend the better part of 4000$ for a one of a kind damascus law vise. I had to laugh a little because it just seems surreal that something as simple as a fly tying vise would ever be that valuable. Yes i understand its a LAW vise and that it is one of the finest tools ever made, that combined with the fact that mr waldron is not currently making them. However if you had this vise on your bench and you spent that kind of money would you actually use it? Or would you encase it in glass and dust it once a day like another museum piece.
Ironic that litterally minutes after the auction ended that another law ( non damascus) was put up for an auction for nearly 3000. Keep them clean boys they are only going up in value, until mr waldron decides to start producing them again.

Your decision now is true rotary vs not. Norvise is true ( many will say its not necessary )
rotary. Dk and hmh are not. Decision is purely up to you. If you are comfortable at a norvise i would say order it. Get the midge jaws first. Most of your tying would be fine
under that one jaw set. And get the large jaws later if you end up tying large streamers and others.
I put the midge jaws on mine in feb and have tied up to size 1 on it. Smallest i tie is down to 18. But i hear it will tie well below that also

I have a nor-vise, So i may be biased. But all three are rock solid. But the other two are more stationary style vises, and the norvise as you know already is a whole different animal. The base price on all three is roughly the same. About 300$. My opinion is to go with the norvise, just decide which jaw set you will use most frequently and order it with that jaw, This will save you from having to buy a conversion kit down the road. And the hmh and eumer tube adaptor will fit in all three of the vises. This will save you from having to buy the hmh or norvise conversion setups unless you really want to buy the one specific to the vise that you end up with.
My question to you is what do you fish for and what do you expect to be tying primarily?
-
Have you tried any of these? All are solid. It depends on your needs. You are going to get a hundred different opinions. All will be valid.

1800 and climbing. I suspect it may get much much higher. Being a one of a kind and the fact that the originals are no longer being made.

I use danville mainly because i used to live 15 away from the factory and could buy my thread on bulk cones rather than on spools. (got a great price that way). I have a few odd spools of orvis, rumpf and gudebrod kicking around. Only uni i have is floss. I plan on getting back into tying small for trout so i may yet try some of the other brands.

They look great. All will catch fish. I love clousers. Easy to tie and fun to fish. Nice work.

I will second skips book. But i use craft store foam with no adverse affects. The trick to no cutting the foam with your thread is to use a gentle first wrap and bear down on the subsequent wraps. Exacto knives and metal rulers work great. But if you have the room an old fashioned school paper cutter works awesome. Fishy fullum talks all about foam in his books and craft store foam is basically all he uses.

No but i had been watching it. Its unique. Not much room to work behind the hook.
More of a conversation piece. Definitely one of a kind.

How about posting a pic of that home made vise?

Flymaster plus and flat waxed nylon work just fine. I use unwaxed flymaster as i buy it in bulk cones and not by the spool.
-
Damn, rw in size 32??? I cant even pick up a hook that little with my hands. Thats impressive.
-
I generally sit higher than the fly. It takes stress off my shoulders that comes with holding your arms up above your lap. Ak best recommends this is his production fly tying book. I could not tie for very long if i sat lower than my vise.

I have had regal vises in both configurations. I like c clamp for most tying but if you tie away from home or dont have a fixed location like a desk or workbench to tie on then a heavy pedistal base is fine. A friend uses a pedistal base combined with a large c clamp (like you would use in your workshop) that allows him to be portable and still spin deer hair without moving around.

I have relatives in wigan. They dont fish but i hope to if/when i ever get across the pond to visit. Welcome to the forum.

Rajeff sports handles their reels here in the usa. Maybe they can get the tools also.

Anything that locks is good. I use a computer cabinet and if i had to i could lock it up high enough to keep small hands out of it.
-
Nice. I have a huge bag of corks that i plan on spinning into poppers over the winter.
Great work.
-
They look great. How do they cast? What weight are you using to toss them?
-
I was given a computer armoire by the mrs. I mounted my nor-vise to a scrap piece of black granite. Cost overall free. But it works none the less.

But i am sure if you look on craigslist or ebay you may find what was in the box. Or a part of it anyway. Still sucks that this has to happen
Dubbing Brushes
in The Fly Tying Bench

Those are all good sources but keep your eyes open for elecrtic motor repair shops. They often have bulk spools of copper. 30-36 guage is an ideal range. No doubling required. Its cheaper than buying spools of commercial tying wire. A 1lb spool will tie thousands of brushes.
