A vise nearly identical, but not in as nice shape just came up on the big auction website. Maybe you can pick it up cheap and have a backup or at least a conversation peice.

I have the hmh, but when i got mine there were few choices. The eumer is great too.

You can make a tube fly box cheap. Glue some rigid foam in a small box and cut slits in it to hold the tubes. Check the web for diy tube fly boxes.

You can get a protube flexineedle for about 15$ that should hold most plastic tubes. Or the eumer tube vise adaptor holds both rigid and flexible tubes. Its about 20$. Not much coin if it does not end up being your thing. If you really want to go cheap get a big package of singer needles at wallyworld its about 8$.

Tubes can be anything from plastic qtip handles to airbrake lines. Lots of choices there.

I use a fairly low chair. But my vise ends up being about solar plexus high as well. But my norvise is mounted on a slab of granite. I can always raise it higher as need be.

Dont forget your local craft stores. They are often cheap suppliers for pheasant tails, peacock and ostrich plumes and biots. Also yarns of all types make great dubbings. Keep your eyes and mind open as to what can be used to tie flies.

Go on to the big auction website. Get a spool of 36 ga enameled magnet wire. Wont tarnish. Can be had reasonable. 5-6000 ft for 40$ or so.

The norbobbin takes time to get used to. Its the only way to go with the norvise unless you are not taking advantage on the rotary feature.

I saw enrico using that vise at the marlborough show. Its a cross between a tiemco and a regal. With the knob from a dynaking indexer. Very pricey. But amazingly versitile. Enrico was not very talkative you would think he would have been considering its his signature vise. I got to play around with a law vise. It was amazing but i still love my nor-vise.

Could use ez mini hooks. Better than test clips. I got mine few years back for short money.

No one is questioning the quality of the anvil vise, It is a solid vise, However people may choose to move on from the vise as their skills and needs advance. I realize that its not necessary to move on as some of the finest tyers tied on a thompson A vise. Its a personal choice, nothing more. Vises are like cars they all do the same basic thing, some have more bells and whistles some are utilitarian.

I had one it held well. Just wanted full rotary so i moved on. Solid and well built with great warantee

For me i buy specifically for a pattern a couple of times a year. But i am always scoping out new materials everywhere i go. Some are bought for other reasons but end up on the fly tying table. Some things are free and get recycled into tying flies. Especially when starting out you should look into cheap and or free stuff makes your budget go a lot further.

If you know any telecom techs that do fios. The fiber drop to the house has a rigid plastic tube inside that once clean makes great tube flies. I got a few feet recently and its great stuff.

My local craft stores have foam and other interesting items but the feathers were subpar and yarns were also lacking. I look all over the place for unusual items.

I started off ordering the fine point jaws for the norvise and the dubbing table. Think i am going to replenish my stocks of fur and marabou. And definitely getting the benchside reference.

That was on my shopping list.

Ordered my self some norvise accessories. Still have 250. Any suggestions?

Nothing fancy but i had everything except a good strong spring. Used a ground wire strap to clamp it around the stem of my nor-vise. Used a coat hanger for now but may hit the local home center for a more rigid metal rod. Tried it out. Works ok for now. With the addition of a better spring it should be good to go. Sorry no pics st the moment. Cant upload from the iphone.
