whats your price range?
-
There was a thread in the tying bench forum. You could try to find a used electronic toolbox. Or perhaps one of the plastic tool boxes from h depot or lowes. They have handles and wheels. My buddy used one for his tackle box. Why not a tying tool box?

Matarelli whip finisher if you use one. And a good hair stacker.

Thinned goop much like softex is brutal on the lungs. Anything thinned with toluene is not for indoor use in my honest opinion. Nasty stuff.

I had one that was used for 15 or so years before I bought it. He said had over 20,000 flies tied on it. I used it for about 3.5 months and then the spring inside went bad. It got so that when closed with no hook the jaws would not completely close and the smallest hook it would hold was a 8 without slipping. For the abuse and also he said he debarbed every hooks as well in the vise, I think it played its part and held up as long as it couldif its a regal they would have repaired that spring for you.. they stand by their product..
did you ever contact them?

Joanns has a gppd plastic rack that works fine/marc
yes they do.. a 60 and 120 spool rack.. both look decent..
saw the same racks on ebay for lower money.. lots of options.. type thread rack..

this is a closeup of what it looks like. That is "Polar Chenille"
widely available in a few sizes and many colors. I've used it for several years.
it was different not glossy. more like a fine yarn

in the un named european magazine they had a straggle fritz that was fine and when you palmered it resembled hackle, really cool stuff.

just curious what bobbins are being used on a regular basis.. please feel free to vote for more than one.. and if i left any off the list tell the brand.. i am using 4 norvise autobobbins, a renzetti, a matarelli, 2 rite (ceramic and magnum). a s&m , and i have several knockoffs..
-
if you are going to do alot of these.. you can get a 3600 ft spool on ebay for 17.00 plus shipping.. thats a lot of brushes..
-
i was told to try electronic places or shops that repair electric motors. you can get away with 32 to 36 ga wire. many times you can find this wire on ebay listed as magnet wire. 0.0063 diameter. it comes plain or coated to prevent corosion.

these are pretty cheap and can be found just about anywhere. rebend into your favorite shape and twist awayand if you want it weighted epoxy it into a brass or other heavy round drawer pull.

That mongoose vise is in another price level. 240 on eBay. There are a lot of choices in this range. It looks solid. But take your time and check out other tyers vises. And try them. Before you spend that much you want to be sure you are going to be truly happy. You never know you might find another vise that really works for you or you might score a deal on a better vise. Best of luck.

I'm thinking about buying the Montana Mongoose Vise it's allot of money for me and want to know if any one owns this vise and what they think of it.Thanks :help: :help:
my take is easy if you are going to spend 150$ on a vise. spend an extra 15 and buy the regal vise from orvis. excellent warrantee and it holds hooks solid no adjustments necessary.
-
i buy all over.. not all of my materials come from fly shops.. i hit them mainly for thread and hooks.. and the odd ball things i cannot find elsewhere.. i have bought from js in the past.. and the fly shop .. cabelas, orvis , bass pro.. we had a great shop on the nh ma boarder where i learned how to tie.. they closed when the owner retired.. what a shame.. they had everything...
there are good shops on line and locally.. generally i try to buy local..
-
some great flies.. amazing what you can do with different materials.. well done..
-
i have taken time off from tying so every visit to the tying bench is an adventure.. trying to relearn things and see what the hands will still let me do.. i used to be pretty decent a tyer.. my friends caught fish with my flies. (more than i did.. but thats fishing skill which is another story)..
they were happy with them.. now iam just trying to get back behind the bench and spin up some thing nice..

for years i used only a c clamp.. (regal).. then i went to norvise. and have been using the platform that came with the kit i got.. i also have a anvil apex.. that i got to use on the road.. or at classes etc.. i have yet to use it.. it has the c clamp and the pedistal..
i have had not trouble doing deer hair on the norvise.. it does not move.. i don't have a permanent tying location yet.. but i am soon converting a computer armoire into my tying space..
i will probably still use the norvise attached to its own platform..

decided to look for my tubes.. i found plastic tubes from 1" to 3" aluminum tubes that were 1.5 and 2' and copper that were 2.5 and 3" .. a bunch of junction tubing and about 6ft of tubing to tie on.. any suggestions?
just in rough estimation i have about 150 tubes to tie on.. had them for years.. hmh and some from england..
-
here is suggestion. look for a used vise. lots of people get into tying and soon get bored the sell cheap. no need to buy new
-
ouch is right. poor cat. you will probably laugh about this down the road. but that was definately no fun .
