  1. Poopdeck: Yeah, they're not necessarily more difficult, just trying to stick with flies that add on new technique into what I already know, to keep my skills gradually building. And thanks for the kind words. Flyflinger: Agree on all your points, dubbing is still a pain for me and I'm always trying to get away with using less and less, but it seems like if I use any less that there will just be the bare thread. How many wraps do you think would be best for size 14 and 16 flies? Flytire: Thanks for the history. Always interesting to see where things started.
  2. Silver Creek: Thanks for the kind words and tips. I'm trying to not spend another $100 on the exact materials for these flies, and instead using what I have that is closest. Once I'm a bit more polished and start to tie more regularly I will get the correct materials. I believe the dubbing I'm using is possum, although I also have hares fur, but I see your point on the guard hairs. I will try and remove them on the next flies. As for the body going slightly into the hot bend, it is something I try and keep just at the right point, but in my defense these hooks are tiny and hard to see! I try to make sure the tail feathers do not bend down when I start my dubbing, if they move down I know I'm into the bend, but I can try and keep it one wrap further from the bend. And your last post on the hackle is very informative, and I'll go back and reread it a few times in the future to try and keep all the info inside my head. Thanks for the advice.
  3. Not getting on here as much as I was hoping, but continuing to tie flies when I can. Started tying nymphs, which seemed easier, and this past weekend started to tie some dries. Heres a size 16 parachute adams, swcond day of tying them so I feel a bit more comfortable. Please offer any suggestions to help me improve as I go. Thanks. Size 16 dry fly hook Grey dubbed body Pheasant tail tail (only feathers I had that were long enough) Grizzly and brown hackle White polypropelene yarn post
  4. Tied up some hares ear nymphs, some beaded and some with lead free wire, with help from some forum members. Ended the tying session just trying something different with the color scheme. Hook: 2× Long Nymph Thread: Tan 6/0 Tail and Wingcase: Pheasant Tail Body: Hair dubbing Natural and Rusty Brown (Pictured) Rib: Ultra wire Gold and Copper (Pictured)
  5. Thanks for the advice, and confirming a few things where I thought I had gone wrong. Managed to have what I believe is now the correct hook, and tied another this morning. Under the wing case may have gotten a little fat, but I feel that overall it is a big improvement.
  6. My first week of tying, started with some easy midges and have just tried my first two Hares Ear Nymphs. First time tying a wing case, and first time making a dubbing noodle. I also think I want a slightly longer hook, even though this ine is a size 14 2×, I have another brand in the same size and its noticably longer. And I feel like the tail is too long. Anyway, I know its not terrible for a first try, but if anyone has advice or tips on things that may help me improve, that would be great! Oh, I used a 7/64" bead, size 6/0 thread, hares ear dubbing, and pheasant tail. And soon I will have my camera back and can get better pics.
  7. I tied some 16 & 18 Griffiths Gnats tonight. Theyve gone well but Im ready for a few bigger flies, I keep crowding the eye, so something a little bigger will be a good change of pace.
  8. Those are on the short list, I did pick up a pheasant tail while at the shop this past weekend, and should also have everything for a hares ear except for hooks and beads. So they will hopefully be coming up soon.
  9. Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm going to try to make it back to the fly shop this weekend to tie up another fly, any recommendations on other good flies to begin with? Just looking for something to gain a few more basic skills and get used togging through the motions. I will definitely join in a swap in the near future, once I feel a little more comfortable I will be sure to jump in.
  10. First day tying today, and excited to do more. Started easy with a handful of zebra midges. Hook: Size 18 Thread: Size 6/0 Black and Red Head: Tungsten bead 2.0mm Silver and Gold Rib: Silver and Copper Thorax: Pecock hurl
  11. Hey forum, a new fly tier here (and relatively new fly fisher too). Located outside of Cincinnati, I bought my vise around Christmas and finally got some supplies today. Tied up my first batch of zebra midges, and ready to get going on more. Ive got some fishing spots within 2-3 hours of me that I want to take my flies to in swarch of trout, and also family in the driftless region where hopefully my flies will be a big hit. Im on here to soak in information, get some queations answered if any pop up, and hopefully help some others out along the way! Heres my first go at tying from earlier today, fairly pleased with the results.
