Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2005 Here's the newest challange fly for you guys to have a go at. This one is called the Magog special and was tied by our very own Troutbum. Tail: Teal flank fibers Body: Flat silver tinsel Throat: Red hackle fibers Wing: White, yellow and purple bucktail (from bottom to top) Topping: Peacock herl Shoulder: Teal flank feather Cheeks: Jungle Cock Just as with our other challange flies the whole idea is to simply get everyone to experiment a bit with these patterns. So if you dont have the exact materials then sub a few of your own and see what sort of simuliar bucktail you can come up with. Have fun

streamertyer 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 Just an FYI - I believe the actual name of the fly is the Magog Smelt. Cheers, CD
pacres 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2005 QUOTE I believe the actual name of the fly is the Magog Smelt. Your correct. Here is my version of the fly. I used a size 2 Carrie Stevens 10x hook for this, and it was a bit of a challenge finding long enough bucktail. I subbed the purple bucktail for ostrich herl, and the teal cheeks with silver pheasant. I also used a white floss body ribbed with silver instead of a total silver body. Hook: CS15 Partridge size 2/0 - 4 Thread: 8/0 Black Tail: Teal flank Body: White floss Ribbing: Silver Tinsel Underwing: White buck tail under pale morning dun (PMD) Bucktail under grey mist bucktail. Midwing: Purple ostrich herl Overwing: Peacock herl Throat: Red Schlappen Shoulder: Silver pheasant Cheeks: Jungle cock eye
