polock 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2006 i was fishing this last week, and I tied on a very large popper, i noticed after 10 casts or so the leader was twisted like crazy, and causing itself to loop up and twist. I have a 6wt setup and i was using a 9' 6x trout tapered leader. just wondering if it is my leader choice that is causing this or what??? If so what type of leader to I need for bulky flies? Redwings1 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2006 The fly design could be faulty causing it to cartwheel in the air, but likely using a 6X leader it would not matter anyway. To cast the big poppers you will need a heavier line leader to give it enough backbone to turn over the fly and keep from twisting on you. When I use big poppers I typically use a 1X or 2X 7'6" tapered leader or just use straight 10 or 12 lb mono untapered.
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2006 Ditto what Mike just said. A 6X is made for casting smaller dry flys, switch to a heavier leader as Mike suggested and you wont have that problem.

topwater 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2006 ditto...try using 2X...also if you are casting big poppers and flies try using a bass bug tapper flyline...makes a world of difference.
