Materelli Whip Finish vs Hand Whip Finish

Recommended Posts

It's just been easier for me to learn and use the materelli faster than with my hands. I've also heard of some sharpening the spade point on the opposite end of the tool to cut the thread with and not having to put it down and then using scissors.

Not sure I'd like that method though.

I prefer the Matarelli because of more precise placement of the wraps in whip finishing. Especially on small flies, the wraps will be side by side,,,,,,hand wrapping has little control and makes a messy wrap.

I use the large and small Matarelli, by hand and could never get the hang of the Thomson, it collects dust. I prefer the matarelli with a flat thread for a neat finnish.

I gotta disagree. I can lay the wraps neatly with my fingers. Again though, I'm not tying microscopic flies. This thread is kind of like asking, which is better, warmwater or coldwater flyfishing, and why? Brings up a lot of great points of view, but there is no answer.

I've seen this debated at least once a year on some board or other. It all comes back to personal preference. I learned to do it by hand and see no reason to buy a tool to do what I can do perfectly well without one. If I were a professional tier, I might be able to save a few seconds, but I'm not. As for neatness, if you take the time to do it right, hand wrapped is just as neat and just as smooth. After all, I've already wrapped the rest of the body neatly and evenly by hand, why should the head be any different?
