Husker234 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2007 It's just been easier for me to learn and use the materelli faster than with my hands. I've also heard of some sharpening the spade point on the opposite end of the tool to cut the thread with and not having to put it down and then using scissors. Not sure I'd like that method though. CM_Stewart 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2007 When I started, my fly tying kit didn't have a whip finishing tool, so I learned to do it by hand. After that, I never saw a need to buy the tool.
FKROW 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2007 I prefer the Matarelli because of more precise placement of the wraps in whip finishing. Especially on small flies, the wraps will be side by side,,,,,,hand wrapping has little control and makes a messy wrap. Regards, FK
DeweyGreen 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2007 I'm just new to this I learned with my hands but I'm(trying to) use a Matarelli now. Can't get the hang of a Thompson
Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2007 I use the large and small Matarelli, by hand and could never get the hang of the Thomson, it collects dust. I prefer the matarelli with a flat thread for a neat finnish.

Again though, I'm not tying microscopic flies. This thread is kind of like asking, which is better, warmwater or coldwater flyfishing, and why? Brings up a lot of great points of view, but there is no answer.
phg 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2007 I've seen this debated at least once a year on some board or other. It all comes back to personal preference. I learned to do it by hand and see no reason to buy a tool to do what I can do perfectly well without one. If I were a professional tier, I might be able to save a few seconds, but I'm not. As for neatness, if you take the time to do it right, hand wrapped is just as neat and just as smooth. After all, I've already wrapped the rest of the body neatly and evenly by hand, why should the head be any different?
