question regarding hackle/throat techinique.

basic question.

 

if too difficult to explain, please point me in a direction to find info.

 

on some wets, streamers etc...............a patch of hackle is used for a "throat". is this hackle spun around and just gathered/pulled down underneath? or is it just a section/clump tied in underneath?

 

same question applies to wets that have the same look under and above.

 

thanks for any help insight on this one. yet another newby question.

The Atlantic Salmon tyers will typically wind the hackle around, and pull it down, locking it with a few turns of thread. Wet flies use both methods, sometimes you wrap it around and tie it down, sometimes you strip some fibres off of the rachis and tie them in as a 'false' collar or throat. For trout wets, I like to use false throats in an effort to keep bulk out of the head. For Marbury flies, I do the wraps and tie downs.
