juice 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2007 I've received a couple tube flys in swaps and would love to learn how to ty them. Does anyone have any advise for a "so-so" tyer. I heard to use hollow Q-Tips for the tube, but how do I hold the thing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated. Thanks Guys Juice
letumgo 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2007 Juice, The tube and be held in a number of different ways. Many people use a special tube fly vice attachment, but it is not necessary. You can modify a streamer hook to allow you to hold tube blanks. I took a 6XL streamer hook and cut off the eye of the hook and the hook point (be sure to file or sand the sharp edges off). I then slide the tubes over the hook shank and tye the fly the same as you would a regular fly. You will need to get some junction tubing (flexible silicon tubing) to add to the end of the tube. The junction tubing helps keep the tube from twisting while the fly is being tied and later serves to hold the hook in place. I wrote a few articles for Hatches Magazine that show photos of the steps required to tye a tube fly. If you look in the Step-by-step section of this website you can find links to each of the articles. I recently posted a detailed step-by-step article on a pattern called a "Simplicity Minnow" that is a great starter fly, and is very easy to tye. Here are some shortcut links to the articles. http://hatchesmagazine.com/page/october2006/271 http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=24980 http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=26712 Steelie also recently posted a link to an outstanding set of articles for tube flies. These articles will probably answer every question you have. http://globalflyfisher.com/

letumgo 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2007 You asked for it... There are a couple tutorials giving step-by-step instructions for tying tube flies on this web site (go to the tutorial section for details). You should also do a search on "tube flies" in the pattern database to see a range of different pattens. Here are some useful tube fly links I've come across while surfing the web: http://flyfisherman.com/ftb/bctubeflies/ http://globalflyfisher.com/keywords/?keyword=tube_flies I also recently purchased the new book by Mark Mandell and Bob Kenly (Published Spring 2007) "Tube Flies Two - Evolution". It shows photos of tube flies from an impressive number of tyers. This book is a nice extension to their original book on tube fly patterns. http://globalflyfisher.com/reports/mandal2002/ http://www.hmhvises.com/tubeflyguide.pdf#s...tube%20flies%22 http://www.akflyfishers.com/fom_tube_flies.html http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/t...ps/part136.html http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/p...sh/part245.html http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/p...sh/part246.html http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/p...sh/part247.html http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/p...sh/part248.html http://www.tpagsco.com/ http://www.irishangler.com/ http://www.angelfire.com/wa/salmonid/contributor18.html http://www.canadiantubeflies.com/flytying.html BOOKS ABOUT TUBE FLIES: http://globalflyfisher.com/reviews/books/b...ngle.php?id=159 http://globalflyfisher.com/reviews/books/b...ngle.php?id=140 http://globalflyfisher.com/reviews/books/b...ingle.php?id=92 http://www.kensawada.com/w/list.php?l=e&itemId=4482
