Wesley Klein 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2007 Here is a alevin pattern fly that I came up with. I am wondering what fish that alevins catch and how to fish them.
rockworm 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2008 An alevin is a newly-hatched fish. As such, it would be easy prey to almost any non-vegetarian fish bigger than it is. These little guys keep a low profile: hiding behind rocks and in vegetation near the bottom. And probably make a mad dash for better cover whenever they are threatened. So I guess you might try fishing right on the bottom. Maybe with an occassional fast pull to simulate flight. Yours is size 6? That's a big baby fish! Does it represent a salmon? I've seen (and eaten) salmon eggs and doubt a newly-hatched salmon could be so large.
rockworm 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 Wesley I checked it out and it appears that salmon alevins are commonly tyed in sizes #6-10. Your fine-looking pattern is right on the button if you are fishing when salmon alevins are available. Salmon eggs hatch between December and February (Pacific Salmon) or April (Atlantic Salmon) and the alevins remain in the gravel until the yolk sac is absorbed. They become free-swimming between March and July (Pacific) or May to June (Atlantic) (depending on the species and water temperature) and drift downstream at night, hiding in the gravel during the day. rockworm 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2008 Steelhead have a varied diet which includes salmon eggs and small fish. So I would guess yours would be an appropriate pattern for spring fishing.
