bowfin47 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I weave a lot of flies out out 25 to 80 lb. mono., and on almost all my saltwater flies I use mono thread. Cutting lots of light mono, or just a few pieces of heavy mono, will ruin a pair a tying scissors in short order. Instead of using scissors, for the last 5 years I've been using a pair of Sandvik Cutters - #8140. They are the best tying "scissors" going... bar none!! I've use these cutters to make thousands of cuts on mono, and I can still reach in and snip a single fiber of whippy marabou or neatly snip a single strand of the finest mylar flash material. While these Sanvec's are rather expensive (about $80), I understand that you can get were similar cutters for $12-20 at electronic wholesale suppliers that will work just as well. soft hackles 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Day 5, I too use the Dr. Slick TC and love them, but have had problems with the set screw. I keep a precision screwdriver at my bench and tweak them when needed. I just joined this board, it's good to see you on here. I went to seminary with Lon and heard all about your fearless jump into commercial tying. Never thought I would actually recognize a poster!
djbvt 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2008 I been using Dr. Slick TC scissors for 3 years now. I just replaced them with the 3" Razor Scissors, as the TC scissors had gotten a little dull. I thought I would try something new and have liked the Razor Scissors a great deal. Never had a problem with the screw on my TC's. DJB
Al Beatty 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2008 Hi day5, Gretchen and I have been using Wiss Clips with replacement blades for 15 years (me more than 30) and they serve us very well. We sharpen the blades when we can but at the reasonable price the replacement blades run, we usually just replace them. When we are "heavy" into tying hair wing dries, we go through a set of blades every month or six weeks. I also stock scissor that come from the Slick factory but don't have that name on them. Contact me via email (mailto:[email protected]) for wholesale info/minimum orders. Take care & ... arkle 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2008 The guy I get my scissors from is a surgical instrument specialist, he imports from all over the world. He tells me that most of the "top German" names are now either owned by or sourced by manufacturers based in India or Pakistan, and that includes some of the above mentioned names. I've dealt with him for 15 or more years, and bought many pairs for both myself and others. He can take a new pair in a sealed pkt. from a manufacturer and sharpen/set it like you wouldn't believe; take out an individual fibre from a strand of peacock herl! Some of the scissors I've had were from his scrap box, including a pair of t.c. edged ones, these I didn't like - but they only cost me a trout. The carbide insert broke when in use on some light material, on close inspection the welds were not made properly, hence it was in the scrap box. Most t.c's these days are carbide anodized, which prevents this although they can't be sharpened and expected to last. I did see some time ago that Dr.Slick (Indian sourced, I gather) has started to sell titanium scissors, haven't seen 'em yet; but they sound okay.
