Super Tails ???

Recommended Posts

I have read a couple of fly receipts that call for tying in super tails.

What are super tails, and where do you get them.

Last are they worth the trouble finding them.

Thanks

They are known as 'Rob Mclean's Super tails". They are long semi-translucent fibers that are light yet fairly rigid. They are hard to find in Canada so I never bother. If you do a Google search for Rob Mclean's Super Tail, you might find something. They make a good long tail fibre for flies like spinners where two fibres are split apart for a tail.

Hi FalconSprint, I use Micro-Fibbets or these tails as a substititue http://www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?stor...mp;target=TF013 and I use them alot.

Cheers, Futzer.

I also use the Micro-Fibbets, I like them very well.

I just am courious about the super tails.

I did a google search before posting the question but did not find anything.

By the way, I have used Rob Mclean's quills for the quill bodied flies and love them.

Thanks for the replys.

Cool, if you have trouble finding them in Canada maybe we can find them in the US and ship you some. Let me know. Jeff

Go shopping for paint brushes in your local home depot or lowes, you will find all the tailing material you will need for long split tails.

I've butchered many paintbrushes over the years...I cut them off and then bag the fibers.

I found something that you might try. I picked mine up at Wal Mart in the men's shaving department. Pick up a Boars Hair shaving brush. The hairs are about 2 ½ inches long and are light in color. Also they can be colored with a marker to any color you want. There must be a couple of thousand hairs for $5.00. Pretty good deal.

Just an update on the Boars Hair Shaving Brush. The hair on the outside of the brush is black in the middle of the hairs, but the inside hairs are all a nice cream color.

Thanks guys for the ideas to use paint & shaving brushes instead of the specialty fly tying tails.

I'm sure the quantities will be MUCH GREATER and cheaper than the others.

I'll definitely try them.

I appreciate the reply's.

Thanks
