letumgo Cased Caddis

Recommended Posts

That's a great looking cased caddis.

When you say heavily weight the middle of the hook do you mean just a couple wraps in the middle of from the middle to the eye?

I'm going to tie a few of these for the coming year.

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce - When I tye these I generally use around 10 wraps of .030" wire (lead, lead-free or copper all work fine). Basically wrap around half of the hook shank to give the fly enough weight to sink to the bottom quickly. The other reason I weigh the shank heavily, is to help turn the fly over so that it tends to fish with the hook point facing upwards (helps reduce snags/fouling). You need to add enough weight to counterbalance the bend and point of the hook.

I leave a small gap near the eye of the hook without any wire wraps. The body will be narrower near the eye, which helps form the taper of the body. Once the body is formed, I often rough up the dubbing with a piece of velcro.

These flies fish very well in the early spring, just after ice-out.

Have fun!
