Well you can tie any fly pattern you fancy in black. Traditionally I suppose a black dry fly would look to mimic a black natural so gnats, hawthorn, meat flies. You will need to be a bit specific on what size you are looking to tie and what you're looking to mimic as the difference between a gnat and a meatfly is huge.

Black Midges are quite common.

Couple of easy patterns, first Syls Midge:

Hook: Dry fly size 16 (the midge is smaller, but Syl says these work just as well)

Body: Black dubbing.

Wing: Partridge hackle as wings, legs etc just a turn and a half.

Or tie the Black Griffith

Hook: dry fly size 20 to 28

Body: black wood duck body feathers (use like peacock herl)

Hackle: Dun or Grizzly midge saddle.

I have never been able to find a black saddle small enough to tie this small, but I have used dun or grizzly and have no problems catching fish with this pattern.

Dont forget black ants. They are fished dry. Two balls of black super fine with black hackle in the middle.

If you can find a magpie they have some lovely glossy black feathers. Cookshill sell some but not sure about the postage.

I have plenty of glossy black feathers, just no midge saddles small enough to tie palmer hackles on size 20 and smaller Griffith gnats. It doesn't really matter all that much, the fish don't seem to mind the dun or grizzly hackle at all.
