What's your favorite insect hatch to fish?

Recommended Posts

Taxon...right on for the BWO's, we refer to the cornutas as such as they are twice the size of any other BWO. size 14 or even 12 in some cases. They can be quite a blanket on dark days.

Ok, specificaly I like fishing Stoneflies here on the Vancouver Island (B.C.) because they were the first insects I have encountered at the stream. But the mayflies however are a close second.

Okay, B.C.TroutHunter, I've tallied you for Stonefly hatches.

That puts us at:

17 for Mayfly hatches

16 for Caddisfly hatches

4 for Terrestrial hatches (2 Beetles, 1 Hopper, 1 unspecified, 2 Ant, 1 Wasp)

5 for Stonefly hatches

3 for True Fly hatches (2 Chironomid, 1 Cranefly)

1 for Scud hatches (not really a hatch, but who cares)

So far we've heard from at least one flyfisher in each of the following locations:

Alaska (Kodiak Commando)

Arkansas (JarrodRuggles)

Australia (Smuggler, swaddo)

British Columbia (tattooedtrout, Roggys_Doggy, FloydianSlip, B.C.TroutHunter)

Bulgaria (Radoslav Kiskinov)

Finland (TKontio)

Kentucky (getholdofjoru, Rob Knisely)

Michigan (steeldrifter, Airhead, trout traveler, hexfli)

Minnesota (JasonN)

New York (Shaq)

Nova Scotia (Daryn Smith, Bras D'or Creeper)

Ohio (fishintalk)

Ontario (tightlines, vices, Mr. Trout, artimis)

Oregon (Smokeytrout)

Pennsylvania (jmmccutc, mcfly, pennscreekrules, luvinbluegills, Conehead, bly65, nedbm3, atroutbum2)

Tennessee (appalachian angler)

Utah (nightfish)

Washington (Taxon)

Wisconsin (TOMMY TROUT)

I have only fished one hatch so far: early black stonefly (and midges too i guess). And I still have yet to catch a fish from a river, so I guess I can't really pick a hatch. However, I just read a river report today that said he saw some fish splashing at the surface, and he thought they were going for BWO emergers, so this could be my chance! headbang.gif headbang.gif

Back in Utah the best hatch is usually the BWO's in the spring and fall. The hatches can be epic, especially on those rainy/snowy days. Here's a few pics of our local species.

Michigan Trout Guy-

Not a problem. Based on the enthusiasm you express for fishing a Blue-wing Olive hatch, I will tally you for Mayfly hatches. Most of us are less experienced than we might desire, and less knowledgeable than we might believe. Perhaps I'm going overboard in assigning those attributes to others, but I can assure you, they do apply to me.

Sorry, but vertebrate hatches aren't included in this tally.

Without question the early Spring Green Caddis and the Fall October Caddis are my two most favorite hatches to fish on moving water.
~Mark~

Okay, flyfishingmark from Colorado for Caddifly hatches.

Mayfly hatches

Okay, Pakito from (I'm guessing) either Spain or Portugal, I've got you logged for mayfly hatches. Please let me know which country you are from, so I can properly update the statistics. It would also be nice if you would add the country to your profile. My belief is that the anglers/fly tyers on this board are curious about the naturals and artificials elsewhere in the world, and that once they know where you are from, will have lots of questions for you.
