Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

SilverCreek, a nice comparison and a great alternative to the chadwicks! plus a huge cost saving which is always a bonus.

A nice selection of flies to work through William... :-)

Hallo, I'm a newbie to both fly fishing and tying. This is a great post so thanks all - saved to 'faves'

In Silver Creeks' closeup pics of the 2 patterns : Chadwicks and Berroco both wet and dry versions look similar.

They each have a wire 'underbody'. So my daft question is - what other ingredient will make one float and the other sink?

Is it the obvious application of floatant to one and sinkant to the other? Thanks in anticipation.

Doe, it's not dry and wet as in how fished. Not as a dryfly or wet fly. It's dry or wet as dry or soaked in water. Materials look differently when they are wet. He was showing how they both look similar when dry as well as soaked.

Not only do the colors match dry and wet, Phil also looked at both the Chadwick-447 with Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine #1214 under UV light and they looked the same. I sent a skein of the yarn to Hans Weilenmann, who also has an original card of Chadwick-447. He will compare the two yarns as well.

this has been an interesting and informative thread. it will be interesting to see what Hans input will be. with the history of the original yarn, a full card mounted in a shadow box would kinda look pretty cool, imo.

Thanks for the wet/dry info Fisherboy - I guess I should have spotted that. It's a pity the 477 has been discontinued, even though Thomas Chadwick & Sons are still going strong here in the UK.

I've found a seller of Berroco in the steel cut oats color. Unfortunately they only stock the heavier grade of yarns, used for the chunkier pullovers and cardigans.

I may buy some if I can't source the Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine grade over here. Mind you, 400 yards should last me several life-times :)

PM me if you can't find it. I bought 6 skeins of the correct color. I gave one to Hans, another to Gary Borger and still have 4 of the correct dye lot.

Unfortunately, shipping to Europe is more than the yarn itself costs.

Thanks Silvercreek for your kind offer. As you say, shipping costs to Europe are excessive, mainly because they won't 'ship' by surface mail but insist on air-freight.

While looking at Killer Bugs I came across Tim Cammisa's version on youtube :- http://tinyurl.com/n76rvhv

As you see, he uses Jamieson Spindrift in oyster :- http://tinyurl.com/mglgprf

It's also a 2 ply wool as per Chadwicks and Borroco UAF. At this price I'll also get a match for the more yellowy sand, used on the bed of the local lake/reservoir. Could prove handy for bodies for other patterns.

I think the oyster will work better on the feeder streams.
