redietz 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2017 Consider that line weight designations for fly rods generally (there is no industry standard) indicate line weight that loads the rod properly with thirty feet of line plus your leader past the fly rod tip top. Sorta. It's true that line weights are based on the weight of the first thirty feet of line (based on a standard), but as you indicate, there's no standard that says the rod maker needs to balance the line on those thirty feet. They make a guess about how a rod will be used and recommend a line weight based on that. If the rod, say, a six footer and rated for a two weight (I own one like that), the rod maker has probably decided that its most probable use is for short casts on small streams, and made the line weight recommendation based on a shorter distance than 30 feet. At the other end of scale, there was one company (I forget at the moment which) that advertised its rods as "forty foot rods", meaning the rod balanced the given line weight with 40 feet out -- the rods where made for distance casting and assumed you wanted to aerialize 40 feet before shooting. That's not say that your advice about trying a different line weight isn't valid -- the rod maker may have had a different use in mind.
