mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2018 Personally I think tipping should be illegal, for this very reason; or it should be included in the billing and documented by the employer. Of course I also see it as demeaning to the servant, on which others don't seem to agree with me. This is an older thread ... but I had to comment on this part of your post, tjm. Tipping is documented by the employer, if you use a card, and put the tip on your card. For that reason, I recommend always using a card. You can tip the percentage you want to, and have it shown on the receipt. However, that amount IS taxed. If you really like your server, you can add a cash tip, which is up to the server to report. I don't know where you get the perception but, having worked at several positions in a restaurant, I can tell you, tips are not considered demeaning by the servers. I can also tell you that the server doesn't keep ALL the tips you give. When I worked behind the scenes, setting up the plates to be taken to the table, the servers tipped US out of their tips. If I did a great job, I got a pretty good chunk of change from the grateful servers. Tips should be used to show your approval of a job well done. In MOST States, a servers wage is "base pay + tips." It's supposed to be based on minimum wage ... base pay and an average 16% tip per meal served. Where I worked (A couple of decades ago) you had to average 35% tips to get to minimum wage. Most of the servers would get that or a little above.
