I wonder if we all will get the same colors? If not, let the swapping begin!

Thanks for the help and encouragement rockworm. I will let everyone know how it turns out.

Thanks for the clarification on the "peacock brush" utyer. Good for making herl stronger and bushier, but not faster. I have tried the dubbing loop before , but gave it up for now until I can get a good eye for proportions.

I am probably a bit slower than most considering my experience level (low) and thought making a long strand of several pieces and rotary wrapping would speed up things a bit. I have seen them advertised in catalogs and stores so thought there was some merit to them. Maybe I just need to tie a few dozen prince nymphs and make my own speed. I might be confused as to what a "peacock brush" is. Is it not just several herls braided, glued, or whatever together to form a long strand?

Thanks rockworm. I was afraid of using the wrong dye and destroying the hackle. I will definitely pick up one of the above mentioned books. I started tying thinking I could make flies for cheaper but I bagged that idea real quick I thought fly fishing wasn't going to cost much either. :hyst:

Thank you for the input everyone. Now to hijack my own thread. As far as matuka's go, can you dye hackle to achieve the desired color? I know you can buy dyed hackle, but can you do this at home?

I have 5oz. of strung herl and was wondering how to make a brush out of it to make my tying go a little faster.

Search :wallbash: ~ I should have thought of that. Thanks for the tip. Now I have plenty of ideas. One more question- can I use hen saddle in place of partridge? I found a lot of patterns in the database that called for for partridge hackle that I am thinking hen saddle would work for. Please tell me if I am wrong. Thank you

Yes, pictures would be nice. If anyone has any patterns I could use this for, please let me know what they are. Thank's again!

Hi, Brian I live just a few miles North of you and have fished a little in Utah. Along with the above mentioned nymphs, I would also recommend learning to tie the BLUE WINGED OLIVE in 16 & 18. This is a great time to catch a late day hatch especially with the weather we have been seeing.

I am new to tying and I have some grizzly hen saddle hackle that I received with some other items I bought. This does not look like dry fly hackle(wide downy feathers). The only pattern I could find to use this on is a matuka but even this calls for dyed feathers. Can someone tell me what patterns I could use this hackle on? Thank you
