  1. Hey everyone. I just got access to the internet for the first time in a couple weeks. I was recently deployed on short notice (I'm in the military) and wanted to get on here to look at pictures of everyone's flies since they didn't show up before I left. I can't remember the exact date but I sent mine what seems like several weeks ago. If you didin't get them yet I wouldn't keep waiting, just go ahead without me. They will either show up on your doorstep soon or they will be sitting at the post office when I get back. Sorry this happened like this, but I'm not sure that I can do anything about it right now. I'm not sure when I'll be back, but as soon as I am, I'll let you know...again, don't wait on me to send peoples flies out.
  2. Hi everyone. I wanted to let everyone know that I have been deployed overseas and that I won't be able to complete the flies for this swap. I left on short notice a little over a week ago and I'm not sure when I'll be back. That's the nature of the game I suppose. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy your flies and that I can participate in one of these sometime in the future.
  3. sorry to be posting this after the deadline, but I've just now been able to get online. I'm in the military and was deployed last minute about a week and a half ago. Can't say where or why, but if you watch the news i'm sure you have an idea. I'm really sorry about this! Hope everyone had fun tying and that whatever you get in the swap catches fish!
  4. Mr. Vegas, I put my copper johns in the mail yesterday....I hope you all like them!
  5. Sorry for the late decision...I think I'm going to tie a fur strip clouser.
  6. I thought they might. I think I just found the fly for a swap im in. Tidewaterguy are you in the vs beach area?
  7. That's a great looking fly. Think it would be a good striper fly?
  8. Gaffer, I love that tying closet. That just gave me a new idea. Instead of the orvis desk, I think I'm going to head to IKEA and buy an armoire to modify. I think that will work great.
  9. Well, I've been doing this tying stuff only since January first, and my wife is already close to beating me. The kitchen table is full of hooks, wrappers, fur, feathers...you get the idea. So, I've decided to build a copy the fly tying desk that orvis sells. I have already decided on a few modifications. One being a pullout hook storage area which is basically a board with small recesses milled into it to hold the hooks. I will epoxy a rare earth magnet in the bottom of each recess to keep the hooks in place. For any of you that have not used these magnets, check them out...they're tiny and super strong. I currently use an old hook box and glue a magnet to the bottom of each portion. The hooks in each area all ball up to each other, which makes them easy to grab, and the magnets are so strong that you could drop the box with the lid off and the hooks wouldn't go anywhere. So, any tips that I should think about incorporating into this desk? Thanks in advance.
  10. I'm curious about these dubbing brushes. Looks like they are good for using on saltwater patterns. Can you substitute them for hackle on a dry fly or would it be too heavy with the wire? ~ Jason
  11. thanks for everyone's input. I too thought the thorax was a bit too short. The next one will be longer. To fix the legs from rolling to the bottom of the fly, i enlisted the help of my scissors. That problem is solved. So it looks like the 200R hook is fine for this bug? I must have put 500 miles on my car over the last couple weeks trying to find some tiemco 5262 hooks. I couldn't find them so i just use the 200r's that I had. I think they'll work fine. Thanks again, Jason
  12. Prepping flies for my first swap. I have some time to make corrections so please give some feedback. I tied these size 14 on a 200r hook with a 1/8" bead. Thanks in advance. Jason
  13. Ok, here's how they turned out. I have not added epoxy yet. These are the first flies I've posted on here so be gentle.
  14. Does anyone ever tie the copper john on a tiemco 200r? What are your thoughts? Im going to give it a spin and see what happens.
