  1. is that a a sequin(sp?) on the nose? very cool!
  2. thank you very much for your kind words! although i cannot take credit for the cdc...mark (willowhead) made a post about in another thread and fortunately i have plenty of cdc (thanks to the southern tailwaters) and decided to use it since i lack long webby hackle in my tying stash. The hook is a gamakatsu spey. I think if i had not extended beyond the hook point for the body the fly would seem to be proportioned(?) better. Mark, It's funny when tying flies for trout and bass I have learned the difference between the right and wrong material...after repeated attempts to tie a beautiful fly it becomes obvious :hyst: However, being back home in charlotte, nc vs. up at school in the mountains i found way to much free time to devote to tying (if there is such a thing ) i was determined to try and get that daggum wing right, no matter the material! Thank a bunch I already owe you big time for your help! cheers guys i'll give you a few days break while i get re-situated back at school after fall break before i post another fly with more questions -josh
  3. HAHA! I swear it accidentally fell out :hyst: Tough to blame tying mistakes on anyone other than yourself I after spending all of turkey day trying to use mallard flank and asking you guys questions I learned it wasnt' the right material for the job but i was frustrated enough to try and FORCE it to work I'll post more questions when the new materials arrive...just figured i'd warn you :yahoo: THANKS!
  4. Here's my first attempt at a traditional syle spey. My hackle for the body pulled out accidentally, so it's lacking that. Had a bear of a time trying to find mallard flank feather that would work correctly for the wing. The body was also short, so i have a big gap between my head and the hook eye. Proportions are always fun to figure out on new flies top view, I have a feeling my wing is slightly to narrow? and a glasso style, however my wings are not tented and slightly to high. I liked willows (marks) idea of using cdc for a body hackle. There's a poof of something on the head in this picture though...not too sure where it came from :dunno: thanks for all the help guys, you all rock! I have some bronze mallard, goose shoulders, and schlappen on order!
  5. awesome fly! the body is sweeeet...but i'm digging the red hackle for the throat!! :headbang:
  6. very neat tie! I have never thought to use marabou like that :headbang: both flies are fantastic!
  7. Thank you that is a perfect tutorial on how to set up the wings!! :headbang: now i'll sit and wait patiently until my bronze mallard arrives :yahoo:
  8. I had found a tutorial online on doing these wings and it said the same thing (about grabbing slips from either side of the feather depending on which wing you were doing) but unfortunately it did not go into much more detail. my mallard flank is wanting to roll over on top of itself (think cylinder) at the tie in point probably part of the reason i've never been a big fan of ducks thanks again fella's
  9. man go figure! :dunno: there went my white/black barred wing! thanks!! :hyst:
  10. After enjoying two wonderful turkey dinners I decided to spend the evening trying to learn how to make wings out of mallard like the beautiful example by fellow member MICE http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?sho...c=32199&hl= First of all the fibers are "unmarrying?" themselves as i prune them 90 degrees from the stem if I make it past the first problem I run into the problem of the fibers wanting to rotate every which way when I tie them in I notice on some websites they offer "quality mallard flanks" is this what i need versus the mallard flanks I have which have an extemely curved stem? thanks again! -josh
  11. Mark, Thank you again for your generous offer, I greatly appreciate it! You are correct that these flies are a ton of fun as well as a great break from tying the 18's, 20's and 22's that I am accustomed to fishing this time of year! I have been enjoying trying to PLACE all the materials on the hook versus whipping up some flies to sacrifice to the rhodo tunnels as well the locals in the creek. Thanks again for the advice everyone, I look forward to posting more flies and learning from you all. -josh almond
  12. thanks for that tip too! i like my buggers loaded down with hackle but i think stripping one side and giving this fly a lighter hackle would have been a great idea!
  13. yeh my hackle selection is kind of poor the white is off of a herbert miner cape and the grizzly is a no name woolly bugger saddle thanks for the tip!
  14. uh oh is that some flash that i see?! lookin good already!
  15. My hackles are mismatched size wise, it needs a tail and the colors seem off but other than that I kinda like it tag: silver oval tinsel Body: shellfish pink floss rib: silver oval tinsel thorax:pink sow scud dubbing rib: silver ultra wire 1st hackle: white wing: grizzly saddle 2nd hackle: grizzly saddle its funny, i palmer hackle all the time for dries and woolly buggers...but i've never had to PLACE a hackle right behind a wire then counter rib it...you guys are insane!
  16. that is one sweet tie!! sorry for the question but what is the purpose of the wing? trying to figure out a method to the spey fly madness
  17. thanks fella's! Found the hooks in a discount bin and figured i'd give it a shot. I know that red seems to be unorthodox for a hook color but maybe you guys have some pattern suggestions?
  18. first attempt not too sure what I did or what i'm supposed to do this stuff is addictive :headbang: any tips/ideas/criticism welcome :yahoo:
  19. i'm in TBD although i'll probably have them tied today and mailed out tomorrow

  23. Had a new friend teach me how to weave on friday afternoon. So after all the school work my professors decided to hand out for the weekend i decided to try and expand my knowledge in the fly tying arts For a swap on another site, so hopefully they receive a warm welcome! also learned that antron yarn doesn't seem to be the best material for weaving, but i'm happy with how they turned out. Just a few stray fibers here and there sorry for the pic quality but the dorm room doesn't offer great lighting :dunno: learnin lots from this site fella's thanks for havin me aboard!
