  3. I would think so! I haven't actually tied one, but have given thought to tying one up if I ever get back up to a certain lake near me.....I was thinking of using balck or brown straight cut(as opposed to cross cut) bunnie strips for the tail and then wrapping the strips aroud the hook to build a body.....you could even use some elastic to form a pair of legs off the back.....just a thought.... Mike
  4. Welcome Aboard! Mike :headbang:

    I'm Back

Glad to see you back! Mike :headbang:
  8. The outerbanks flyfishing forum has a tremendous amount of info. including locations to try and fly patterns.....there are no fly shops out there so you will need to bring everything w/you....you might get lucky and find a couple generic leaders or bubble wrapped flies in some of the bait shops, but that is about it.... Mike
  9. :headbang: :headbang: Good Luck! We had sun and mid-40's here today in Dayton.....on my way home, I saw plenty of open water in the rivers.....I think we have a cold front coming in over the weekend though..... Mike
  10. I was there last summer (further south in Waves)......was doing the family thing and did not get any flyfishing in....a little bit of surf fishing w/the kids......however, I will be going back because my brother built a house near there......here are some websites I found helpful for my future trips: http://www.outerbanks.org/faqs/index.asp Generic tourist website w/a lot of good links..... http://www.flyfishinsalt.com/article.jsp?ID=32025 an online article about flyfishing in the area.... http://oregoninlet.us/flyfishing/login.asp...get=default.asp a closed forum run by a guide service....lots of good archived info. http://outerbanksflyfishing.com/index.cfm the updated website run by the same guide service as above....more current info. http://www.atlanticcoastcafe.com/ If you get down to waves, this is a great little restaurant w/fresh local seafood...opens early w/good coffee and fresh baked goods. hope this helps! Mike
  11. I use bead chains as well, you just have to test them first....sometimes there isn't enough weight in the eyes to invert the hook, so your fly rides upright like a normal bucktail and if you are using multi-colors in your wing, they wind up reversed......I tie on the eyes when I am using a new size and dropit in a tank on some line and see if it rides properly.... Mike
  12. Happy B-Day!!! :headbang: Mike
  13. Welcome Aboard! :headbang: Whereabouts in Mass.? I moved to Ohio from Chicopee, Mass. about 30 years ago......really miss it....got introduced to flyfishing on the Swift/Deerfield rivers......Make sure you check out the sister sights as well... Mike
  14. Welcome Aboard! Whereabouts in Maine? I spent a couple of Summer vacations up there and fell in love with the place....most of my time was on the coast....I didn't get to venture inland too far......It is definitely on my short list for retirement..... Mike
  15. It's not difficult......not all hides are good quality.....I've cured my own before, but not all hides are good quality or the hair may be good for one application, but not another....what may be good for big bass bugs, won;t necessaarily work for smaller flies such as bodies on irresistables, etc. Anymore, when I need more deer hair, I call Helm and tell him what I want the hair for and he picks out patches of hair that will work for that application...the region that he lives in is well known for quality deer hides and he goes out every deer season and hits all of the meat processors and hand picks the better hides to process......If you do a search, there have been a number of good discussions on this site about processing hides for fly tying. Mike
  16. www.whitetailflytieing.com/ The above link is for Chris Helms fly shop......he is an absolute master w/deer hair! He lives in Toledo, Ohio which is in the NW part of the state.....It's a well known fact that some of the finest white tail deer hair is harvested in Ohio/Michigan.......Chris gathers hides all winter long and prepares/sorts them by type......it would be an expensive phone call for you, but if you e-mail him and tell him what types/sizes of flies you are looking to tie, he will handpick the hair for your application......I get all of my deer hair from him. Mike
