  1. Hey JohnP nice looking fly. I can't wait to see what these all look like when we're all done.
  2. Hmmm good point. David .... Post Whore much? :hyst: I'm just kidding! What can I say. David has a lot to say, and It's all good stuff! Keep it up boss
  3. This book seems interesting to me. Was thinking about picking it up. Anybody here have past experience with this book? I'm just looking for some feedback on it. Thanks guys. Tony
  4. Have you tried tying with more hair? It's a longer fiber dubbing and I feel it creates more uniform bodies as it lays well on the thread with way less bulk than traditional dubbing. Just a couple of strands twisted on the thread adds practically no bulk whatsoever.
  5. Also for t hose flies in post 18 what were you using for the dubbing? Mole hair?
  6. Hey David really nice flies. You tie some small ones eh? Those in post #18 are nice looking, Kinda look like some Dee flies without the married wings. I just went to a local demo to see a guy tie Dee flies and he tied them on hooks without eyes on them. First thing he would do is tie in a loop of silkworm guts to act as the eye of the hook. Said it made it a little easier when you get down to mounting the married wings with such little space without having the metal hook eye in the way. you're far more advanced than I just thought I'd throw that little tidbit your way. Good looking flies though I like em. Tony
  7. Sorry, I didn't realize I had to post what I would be tying. My first swap... For this swap I've decided to tie a local Hair Wing Emerger pattern that I think you guys will enjoy. I'm assuming these swaps I tie as many as their are people involved? So in this case 15. Thanks guys. Happy tying.
  8. I'm in as long as you guys want me in. I've been tying for 3 weeks now and am not nearly as skilled as most of you guys by far, but I take my time when tying and my flies come out neat. Plus the due date gives me a month anyway to improve my skills. I'm on unemployment waiting for my seasonal job to pick back up in spring so I tend to sit at the bench a lot. I'd like to give this a shot if you guys allow me. I could post pics of my work in this topic before you approve me if you wish. So, pending your OK, I'm in. Thanks. Tony
  9. This is my first vice, I went for the Standard which is just one under their top model. I figured It was gonna be my biggest investment in fly fishing next to my rod so I went with a good one that I figured would last me quite a long time. I really like it. It was a toss up between this and Dyna King but for whatever reason the HMH line just shone out over Dyna for me. I also purchased the midge jaws. Next addition the bobbin rest and It will be all set. DOn't even know if I need the bobbin rest yet. We'll see.
  10. Holy smokes. Nice job. Smallest I've tried so far is a 22. Looking good!
  11. Hello. I'm new to all of this. The board, tying, fly fishing. Anyway. I have been looking through your pattern database and am overwhelmed at the vastness of it. So many amazing patterns. I just wanted to thank everyone that contributes to it. As a beginner it really gives me so many things to try and do. I wish some of them had instructions that don't but I can figure MOST of them out. Anyway. Thank you guys. Aside from my local fly shop's discussion board I use the patterns on this site as well as the information I get off of it Daily. I hope that one day I too can contribute to your database. Thanks. Tony
  12. I love this pattern. I am going to tie a few of these up tomorrow. Thanks for sharing this.
  13. Hunter's Mad House ( HMH ) - Standard, I have both the standard and midge jaws. I love this thing. They have me sold for life.
  14. Floyd, thanks for this. I'm new at this. I have woven some nymphs but I have woven directly on the hook. I like this idea of tying it on a needle and then transplanting it to create the extended body. That's a sweet idea I will deff be using this. I love the things some of you people do that I can incorporate into my own tying. Love this. Thanks!
  15. Hey. I'm new to this myself but I agree with dave. You need to make sure when you wrap the maribu you have that pinched tight and it gets tied town just on the top. As for the chenele being too large for the hook it appears so, if you don't want to go out and buy a smaller size what you could always do is after you've tied the maribu in just twist it up and wrap the excess around the shank in place of chenele. Another thing I might add is that it looks like you're coming too close to the hook eye. Crouding it. When you tie in the body material say JUST short of the eye, work the thread back a bit. I'm not sure if that is happening because you're trying to build the head or if It's happening as you whip finish. Are using a whip finish tool or doing it by hand. I personeally do it by hand have never used a tool but that could also be it. Just pay attention to where you're placing your wraps. What size hook are you tying that on? Looking good man. I'm new to this myself. Only been tying a few weeks now but I've already seen myself progress a shitload. Of course I'm on unemployment right now with plenty of time on my hands to just bust out dozens of flies daily. I tend to go overboard with stuff i do and I went out and bought a shitload of hooks and materials. Another thing to think about. The most expensive part of all of this really comes to the hooks. Materials for the things us beginners are tying come cheap. If you produce a fly and don't like the way it came out. Just take a sharp new razor blade run it across the top of the shank and just start over. Keep going man You're only gonna get better. This is where we make our mistakes, while we are learning. Learning from them is the key. Keep it up bro. Cheers from Buffalo, NY
