  1. Let's see who will be the first to post a photo of a fly using their new iPhone 4S...............
  2. Well what us the condition? Do you have photos? How much? Will have to dig it out. Has been stored for about 7 years and haven't used it for about 10 years or more. Only tied a dozen or so flies with it. It was a beautifully built device............. Hardly used. Would have to get 400 I'd love to see a picture of that Pamola fly lathe.

  4. OR, use a vacuum cleaner in reverse and fill the waders tight with air and then put the legs in a water filled tub to find a bubble. Mine get a little wet with condensation at the bottom of the waders.
  5. It's "not just because I have many more years of fly fishing and years studying the subject by reading from the famous fishers and tiers."......or, maybe it is! My point really is not their age and few years of experience as much as it is that such a guide as I described (complaining about rivers being crowded with fishermen) has no right to complain as the rivers are not "his" for his money making gig. Don't be too sensitive about not having a lot of experience though
  6. I know that now the fishing will get good, but I couldn't arrange for it. We usually fish the Fork below Ashton, but they were messing with the dam and the water was a still a little warm when I was there in early Sept. In July, it was one of the only places to fish. Where do you live?? I live in Idaho Falls. Its on the verge of being too big of a city for my taste but heck its got the only Walmart with a fly shop in it LMAO. It does have a legit fly shop and a Sportsman warehouse for all my other outdoor needs. The Fork below Ashton is an amazing fishery for sure. there's also that section below St, Anthony for big browns, but heck the Snake has a bunch of monster browns living within its banks. Theres about 5 other kick ass rives within driving distance and dozens of little creeks to fish. Been to your Walmart fly shop - in the front of the store - right? You also have a "Famous Dave's" What could be better?!

  8. I think I am a Fly Fisher as I only fish with flies and a fly rod. If I also used spinning gear or bait, I guess that would make me an angler...........
  9. Hi, I hope it is acceptable to rant in this particular forum. I just returned from a 2 week stay near Yellowstone Park. It was a wonderful fishing trip. I am sort of a "fly shop rat", so, when not fishing, I was haunting the local fly shops. One afternoon, I was in the Trout Hunter in Last Chance. If you know the shop, I was in the upstairs where they have fly tying materials. A young guide was complaining to the shop clerk (quite loudly) about all the fishermen he had seen that day and also how the fishermen he had seen didn't seem very capable. He went on and on about how "there's just too many guys out there fishing these days!". Now, I would judge his age to be mid-20's. So, my first question is "how long has he been fishing"? Even if he started in his teens, he's only been fishing about 10 years. I have been fly fishing for 40 years and fishing for 50 years. Second question: "What does he know about the 'old days'?". I've been fishing the Henry's Fork for 30 years and I do recall when there were many fewer fishers out there. He certainly can't recall that time!! My last statement would be this: "The folks he is complaining about are true sport fly fishermen. They don't get paid for their day on the water. They are not making a living off the great rivers that belong to all of us. In fact, most are paying a lot of money to come to these wonderful rivers and fish. He, on the other hand, is sucking a living off our rivers." And, when I first started fishing out there, there were very few guides. Lawson's and the Trout Hunter were small guide operations. Now, each morning and evening the parking lots at both shops are full of drift boats and young guys running around with a bunch of flies hooked on their ball caps! That's the main reason there are so many more fishermen out there these days! And, most of us who fly fish out there do not have drift boats. Many of us are in rental cars and perhaps only have one car without a trailer hitch. So, most of us do not float the rivers. The guides do. they take clients to the best water and put them over the fish. We all know there is a certain percentage of accidental kill of fish when hooked. It is my belief that given the number of guides and their use of drift boats, they probably account for more trout accidental deaths than any other source on the river. Believe me, if it were not for Lawson's and the Trout Hunter, I am convinced there would be many fewer folks fishing the Henry's Fork. And, my conclusion is that those 20 something guys in Simms shirts with beards and flies on their ball caps would probably not be there either!!! Forgot to give full disclosure. A friend of mine is a guide for Lawson and has done so for about 30 years. Also, I have used guides - even Lawson's guides. So, I think I am aware of both sides of the coin. My main gripe is that some of these young guides don't seem to understand the big picture and somehow think the rivers "belong to them" so they can impress clients and get large tips........... Oh, almost forgot. I have a couple Simms shirts myself. Nice shirts.
  10. Congratulations!! Where do you guide?
  11. Where its broken is splintered, do you have to do anything else before gluing the eye on? How malive piece rod is it? Orvis is pretty good about fixing their rods even if not covered by warranty. I would try to get an estimate from them
  12. I have vise #80 from Jay! Perfect vise!
  13. There IS a difference between "rotary" and "true" rotary. Some vises will turn the hook 360 degrees, but the hook shank will "wobble" -not stay in a steady horizontal plane. To be true rotary, the vise must allow the tier to make gape size adjustments to the vise in order that the hook shank, while rotating, stays in the same horizontal plane.
  14. Might want to take a look at the book BugWater. It's a book about local bugs here in the Pacific NW. Every single fly in that book was donated by members of our local fly fishing board. No one expected anything in return for sending in the flies. However, the Author had a huge following from posting his bug photos and descriptions for 4 or 5 years on the board until he worked up enough material. We also prompted him into writing the book, while he was just happy posting it on the message board. I believe it took another 2-3 years to get everything approved from the editors, publishers, etc. But the finished product is amazing and one of my best references for matching the hatch. FlyTyer14 - I personally would not feel comfortable sending flies because I have not seen anything from you that could be used in a book. After first reading this, it sounded like a good ploy to get a bunch of free flies. Not saying that's the case, I'm sure you have the best intentions. I agree with one of the above posters, start a blog, and start out with your own flies. Once you get people on board, they will be more willing to help out. Take Care, Chris Like I said, don't let anyone dissuade you. A somewhat famous old school guy Terry Helleckson did something a little similar. He collected patterns from various tiers. In his book, some of the photographed flies were tied by the originators. Would really recommend looking at his book. Bottom line, I am sure most anyone you asked to supply a fly and pattern for your book would be glad to supply one. I think most of us have wanted to do a book one time or another. We would be happy to help you. Thanks, Byron
  15. Best of luck Mark. Don't let anyone dissuade you. Whether or not others buy the book, you will have it for your use and enjoyment. Make a good gift too, if nothing else.
  16. Hi, I casted my new Hardy Zenith on the lawn today. Wow! This rod is the lightest 9 foot 5 wt rod I've ever used. The trade winds were blowing and yet that rod really punched the line through. I noticed something about the rod which I want to verify. The guides (except stripping guide) are single footed. I believe there are a couple more guides on this rod than any other 9 weight I have or have fished. It may be part of the reason the line shoots so well - not sure. Anyone else have similar thoughts? Thanks, Byron
  17. Here are some of mine from George Grant
  18. I have an early HMH vise with two jaws, C Clamp and brass base for sale. Would be about 300 if you're interested.
  19. I've been tying for many, many years. In my opinion, none are better than Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, MT. They have an on-line catalog as well. Byron
  20. The Henry's Fork was one of the only "games" in town due to the high amounts of snowmelt and condition of reservoirs and lakes in the area. It was fishing "fair". Quite a bit of pressure near the top end of the Ranch. I think most of the guides were taking clients down to the lower stretches of the Henry's Fork. They had really good hatches the first week of July, but died down as of the middle of July. Byron
  21. To the best of my knowledge, the "Pott Fly Company" still exists. I bought a framed set of the entire series of woven flies from them about 7-8 years ago. If I'm right, you could probably purchase some for fishing as well. Byron PS Now, I see that "Jimmy's All Season Angler" shop sells a selection of the mite flies.
  22. Al, Thanks for the information. I spent one evening with Bing at a bar in Last Chance when he was tying for the FFF in West Yellowstone. It wasn't the old A Bar, but a different one. He was a real character. I remember the little test tubes Lawson sold where Bing had attached about 6 of his micro extended body flies to a wooden match. Wish I had picked some up.
  23. If you find out will you share it? Kevin Why not use SLF Dubbing. Dave Whitlock apparently designed it to be used to tie his nymphs..............
  24. Thanks!! Now, wasn't the vise head and eye of the hook pointed AWAY from the zinger post?????
