  1. Here are two of "my" patterns that I would consider easy and staples. They have been tested, proven, etc. Any questions, ask! http://www.frankenfly.com/squirrelly-shrimp-ben-treppa/ http://www.frankenfly.com/frankenshrimp-step-by-step-ben-treppa/
  2. Ive been working on the 90' mark for a while. And not just 90'..I want to be accurate still. Bonefish are on my radar for sometime soon so Ive been working on it. 243' is NUTS. I would like to know more about his rod, line, etc. Its hard to compare the 2 styles without knowing what he is using. I know when I switched to all textured lines it definitely improved distance. Anyone wanna share their tips for "distance" casting? For me its really working on my double haul and double haul timing.
  3. Ive seen a ton of different gadgets in my online travels but I have never seen that! Thanks for posting C!
  4. Those razors are scare me lol. Im not good with sharp objects generally so im very cautious. Last injury was in my deli slicer cutting cucumbers for pickles. Off went the tip of my finger. Oops.
  5. Denials are futile: my research has shown that there are plenty of Moose in Michigan. Heck, they even get together for conventions. http://mimoose.org/convention-news/ Bahahahhahahahhahahahahha! The poor original poster had NO idea what he was getting himself into by just asking a simple question.
  6. Jay Bird.. The body is deffinitely covered with Mylar tubing or something similar. This site allows you to get some better detail on it http://www.sierratradingpost.com/umpqua-feather-merchants-no-wimp-shrimp-saltwater-6-trussells-fishing-flies~p~70519/. There are a multitude of ways you can do the underbody. Dubbing, estaz, etc. then you can cover with the mylar.
  7. Huh? Just came back from a trip and no one blinked at the 8 full fly boxes in the carry on that they hand inspected. According to TSA reg page, the only real problem I could see are the scissors, and only if they are larger than 4", and the bodkin. Tools smaller than 7" are allowed, so hemostats and such really shouldn't be an issue. Of course the real problem is the arbitrary nature of the interpretation of the rules, so I'd personally be inclined to check everything just to avoid the hassle. Im guessing you are a trout guy? The reason I ask is my suspicion is it has to do with the size of the hooks. They deff did not let my saltwater stuff on the plane. Hell, I had one of the hooks that go on your hat and I had to talk the guy into letting me take it on. I had to remove it from my hat and show the guy it wasnt sharp. Im flying to cali in a week and half and something tells me they wont like my 10/0 hooks in my carry on. Ill be paying the rape fee for checking my bag for those!!
  8. You've touched on this before and I cant help but nod in agreement. All too often it seems tyers get hung up on right and wrong. Truth is, as you mention, there is no right or wrong. If you dont like the wire, leave it out!! its the beauty of fly tying. I'm the type that has a hard time sticking to a pattern. Hell, even my own patterns vary all the time. I suppose now that I think of it I do the same thing while cooking!! Im not a trout guy really, so I cant add much to the usefullness of the wire. Most of the fish I fish for are predators and have lots of teeth. To combat it, I use certain methods of tying to prolong the fly (reversing bucktail, superglue, etc) but inevitably the fly will be shredded. Just gives me an opportunity to go back to the vise and make another one!
  9. For once I must agree with PJ. Spend some time ( a lot of time actually) reading through..ok lets be real..BROWSING.. the threads here in the salty section. There are some amazing tiers, tips, and pictures contained within. If you start seeing pictures of PJ in feather boa's just proceed to the next thread to save your eyes. As far as rooster... Like others have said, Veverka ties some amazing stuff. Check out his FB page. Im fortunate to pro-staff with him and a couple other baja guys and have seen some SUPER cool flies. Newcomers to this site should be aware that the member quoted above hasn't been the same since his unfortunate encounter with a love-starved bull moose some years ago. Ben deserves a lot of credit for bouncing some of the way back - the shame alone would have destroyed lesser men. Amazing what can be accomplished with massive doses of psychotropic medication these days. For the record we do not have moose in Michigan..however there was that one time with the elk
  10. Flies shouldnt go in your carry on. Hooks cannot be brought on with you. They all need to go into checked luggage. I travel to fly fish a lot so its something I do quite a bit.
  11. Oh yeah! Nice flies chef! Those pelagics are in trouble. What size have you done these ones? Thanks Jam'! The guide told me to make them 2/0-4/0 with varying lengths so thats what Ive been doing! And naturally Im probably tying WAY more flies then I need, but thats the norm for me :-)
  12. Been tying quite a bit lately for myself (nice for a change!) Finally got around to taking a few pics. More to come soon. These are Tinker Mackerel and Mackerel EP flies for Dorado out in Cali in a few weeks. \\
  13. If you dont mind an up-eye the Octopus Gamakatsu should fit the bill. The also have "in line" eyed octopus hooks that i use very often.

  15. I used my Peak Vise with the Saltwater jaws for tying on 10/0 Bluewater hooks without a problem.
  16. Im glad somebody posted this! I have two rite bobbins which I like..but Ive been looking at the stonfo for a while. I like the "drag" doesnt look so hard to turn. The little wheel on the rite bobbin can be tough sometimes.
  17. Its good to see a mugshot without your picture in it PJ!! In all seriousness..I love reading stories like this. Too often I hear how "easy" people get off instead of getting it thrown at them. I still think he deserves more but ill take it.
  18. For Musky I use 2P-10 adhesive. Its got a 4000lb shear strength or something nuts. However, for smallies Id agree with the other poster on goop. Ive used it for a couple years without any problems.
  19. Dave they say the first step is admittance that you have a problem! Congrats
  20. My 2wt reel barely took any backing. Its not really all that necessary to even a bunch on there so I did maybe 5-10 yds. Its cool to hear the method of doing it backwards. Out of experience it took me three times to get the right amount of backing.
  21. Nice Jam'! Love the sculpin heads!
  22. Nice poppers. I hear good things about those hooks too. Supposed to be strong and sharp! yeah, those spearpoint are the sharpest hooks i ever had. not cheap, but 2 most important things are hook and line, everyting else is secondary, so no cheap hooks for me when chasing the big ones I agree. I never cheap out on hooks.
