  1. Anyone? Have the flies gone out?
  2. bentflyrod- funny, cause I subscribe to Playboy primarily for the articles! No really! Granted, seeing a naked Vida Guerra is always fun. Playboy really is a good magazine with some killer articles. I thought the Jason Bourne movies were quite good, actually. They weren't as good as the books, but they did as good a job as you can do with a movie. I enjoyed them. Peterjay, you know John Irving? Lucky! He's my favorite author. I'm about done with "A Widow for One Year" and it's an incredible novel!
  3. All the muddler type flies I saw in the "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout" book were tied sparse too. Muddlers that are more sparsely tied have an action more similar to a suspending jerkbait to me. The ones i've tied real thick float a lot more and remind me more of a Floating Rapala. But anywho, I just add a couple half hitches just behind the eye (on opposing sides) and add a drop of zap-a-gap to each knot. It's worked for me so far.
  4. Has anyone gotten their flies yet? I'm just wondering if mine might have gotten lost in the mail.
  5. I'm growing fond of Woolly Buggers and Bunny Leeches. I'm used to fishing for Bass with tube jigs, Spider Grubs, and other plastics of all shapes and sizes. Buggers and Bunny Leeches do that thing just perfectly. I've never tried a Double Bunny. I might have to try that some time.
  6. I've just recently realized that I LOVE reading. Reading a good book is a GREAT way to pass the time and escape. And I think my favorite novelist is John Irving. I've read (in order) A Prayer for Owen Meany, The World According to Garp, and The Cider House Rules. I'm almost through A Widow for One Year. If anyone likes reading and hasn't tried a John Irving novel, I HIGHLY recommend it. I could go on and on about what's so great about John Irving's books. And I never thought that someone could make James Bond look like a GIRLIE MON (in my best "Hanz and Franz" voice) untill I read the Jason Bourne trilogy.
  7. I'll be heading out to Rochester, NY for the weekend. Leaving about 2:00am on Friday, and we'll probably be there between 10:00 and 12:00. I'm heading up for a wedding, but Friday is free for us. A couple of my friends and i are looking into some fishing opportunities on Friday. We'll have no boat, but a guided trip isn't out of the question. So other than guides, we're shore or stream bound. Any tips will be appreciated! Also, my friends are both spin fisherman, and I'll have my spinning and casting gear in addition to fly gear of that matters.

Ditto. I'm 25 with no sign of my "single" status changing anytime soon. Especially since I'm looking all over the US for a job. No sense of starting something until I get settled down. I really can't wait to find "her" and settle down though. Congrats, BTW fry flier! My parents hit the big 3-0 this year too! May 22 to be exact. My you and your lovely bride have many more years together!
  9. I tied 'em up in a hi-tie style actually. Kinda thin in height though. From the side they actually remind me of a big Bass Assassin. And the trip's postponed for now. Memorial Day kinda scared us. I'm hoping next Sunday, but who knows? :wallbash: We'll be going sometime soon.
  10. Well, I was supposed to be at Cumberland River today. However, both my friend and I were absolutely wiped out. It wouldn't have been fun fishing at ALL due to fatigue, and I doubt we would've been able to make the 2.5 hour trek back here to Louisville. So we're going to be hitting Cumberland on Memorial Day instead. I've heard that the streamer fishing for Trout has been excellent, and that the Stripers are really starting to go bonkers. So this potentially could be a blessing in disguise, because I wasn't able to tie up any big flies. I got some Neer Hair and Super Hair at Bass Pro Shops today and am going to whip up some 6"-6.5" Clousers in addition to the normal trout flies. 6.5" is still considered kinda small for Cumberland River Stripers, but still big enough. I'm hoping to pull double duty with Stripers and big Browns. Has anyone used this stuff? I'm planning on using mostly the Neer hair with a little Super Hair for the back. I'll be throwing 'em on an 8wt with a 200 grain Teeny line.
  11. I tied up an articulated fly and the darn thing rode on its side. Did I make the mono loop too small? How do you get these things to ride straight? I'm thinking maybe Dacron Backing might be the ticket, and make the loop a bit bigger. Thoughts?
  12. Now that you mention that, one very effective color combo for jerkbaits here on the Cumberland is black over gold over orange. I might have to get some orange marabou and tie up a few of those in black over orange.
  13. My FAVORITE way of feeshin! I'm in! I'm gonna do Dave Whitlock's Sheep Shad.
  14. Just got the address and I'm swinging by the post office in about 30 minutes. They'll be on the way today!
  15. OLB, I haven't received your address yet. As soon as I get that I'll head to the Post Office! :yahoo:
  16. I caught my first ever fly-rod Smallmouth on a #4 olive bugger. Measured 17". As a result, I'll never go fishing without some olive buggers in the box. Nice tie too!
  17. I've only been fly fishing since this past july, so take that into consideration. The times I've been trout fishing, only a couple have been conducive to fly fishing (darn wind), so i still have limited experience with streamers (though I've been fishing jerkbaits to them for about 5-6 years). There are only 2 streamers I've tried thus far, but that's because they remind me of my favorite jerkbait for trout. Dave Whitlock's Sheep Shad and Coffey's Sparkelminnow in pearl both have proved effective for me. I wouldn't hit the river with a few of at least one of those. Flies and jerkbaits that incorporate liberal amounts of pearl flash tend to be really good at Cumberland River. I'm going trout fishing there next week and plan on trying out some White Woolly Buggers, Zoo Cougars, bunny leeches (clouser versions), and some Conehead Twin-Tail Madonnas. I'm also going to bring some streamers with chartreuse marabou over white bucktail (unweighted and clouser versions). I need something chartreuse for my streamer box. Hopefully I won't get to try out all of these patterns. If I do try all of these patterns during that trip, that probably means the fishing sucked.
  18. DONE! Final fly: Natural colored #2 Twin-Tail Madonnas. Non-conehead versions, with a bit of pearl flashabou and a bit less red flashabou.
  19. Angel Hair and Wing 'n Flash are the same thing as Lite Brite. Not sure about the Polar Fibre though.
  20. Nice imput! I spend close to $20 for a spool of P-Line CFX, so I was kinda hoping that I didn't waste my money. At least I got about 300 yards of the stuff. I won't run out for a while! :yahoo:
  21. Nice streamer! How did you get the stinger hook to sit so nice and straight? I've been trying stuff but I can't get the fly to ride right! :wallbash:
  22. The post says it. What are your all's opinions? I'm really interested in wether or not you all think the visibility is as advertised. Can you really use 10 or 12 pound flourocarbon in place of, say, 4 pound if they're really line shy? I'm talking about streamers and such that you won't have any problem with action or getting the line through the eye.
  23. I've never heard of rougn river canyon either. I've heard of Rough River Lake. There's some nice Largemouth fishing there and some great Hybrid Striper fishing too. And I'll second Cumberland River (below Lake Cumberland) for Trout and Striper (bring a 10wt for the Striper; they get BIG) and Elkhorn Creek for Smallies. If you fish Cumberland, remember to bring a 6wt, a sinking line of some sort, and some 2"-3" Streamers. Cumberland's best fished from a boat though. A Canoe or Kayak will do nicely. I caught this Brown at Cumberland this past January. Measured 25". One of God only knows how many fish over 20" that are caught each year. Everyone's after 20" Trout (even at Cumberland), but you've got to break 2 feet to seriously drop some jaws down there. Again, bring a boat and float it. You'll have much better luck that way.
  24. After much thought, the rabbit strip flies look too much like a jig 'n pig and not enough like a sculpin. So after much bathtub testing, I've settled on a #2 Conehead Twin-Tail Madonna. 4 down 3 to go.
  25. See if you can cast a spinning or baitcasting rod. It'll be a lot easier on the joints than fly casting all day. You won't be fly fishing, but at least you'll be out on the water. Sorry to hear about that!
