  1. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by sage590: Glass Caddis (click link for more info)
  2. That should catch the big one for sure!!! :headbang: Ashby
  3. I use waxed on my dries and unwaxed on my wet flies. Reason I don't want added water on my dry flies and on the wet flies I want all the water in them I can get. Ashby
  4. :hyst: Too funny Day5. I use mine all the time for everything while tying, and like Day5 for some things it's not meant to hold but will lmao :headbang: Ashby
  5. Myself, I take my travel kit with me most of the time when I go fishing. I have found that at certain times during the day pounding the water is useless so I go back to my truck, eat my lunch and tie up some flies. It's more or less a tool to pass the time in between action. When I'm on a boat though, I always carry it with me. You can come up with some off the wall flies to troll with at that time and give them a little more sparkle for that extra edge if water conditions are not what you perceived them to be prior to your arrival to the lake. 6. ok, all in all it looks as though I have a ton of work to do. Thanks for all your input, tips and advise on this. There are a lot of things that I have not taken into consideration while tying these flys. Pretty much everything mentioned by you guys I have not thought about, but I have something to go by now. Aaron, thanks for taking the time to find me the links. I'll take a look at them and see what else I can do. I know it looks as though I'm going to have to get bigger hooks lol. Ashby
  7. Hey John, thanks for the input. That I didn't know about five turns. I will look for the proportions for the salmon flies and do a little more reading up on them. What is a good all around size hook used to tye show salmon flies with? I was going through some of the photos on the site last night and saw some were over 5 inches long That is huge. Thanks again for the advice. Gregg, yeah they may catch a fish lol, but I'm thinking that is about it. Don't think mine are ready for the box of glass yet lol. Ashby
  8. I've seen the tools but for the life of me can't figure out how to use them lol. I only know how to whip finish by hand.
  9. True! Maybe I need a new book then. I did add the hackle rib for the Highlander, the floss and extra oval tinsel for ribs on the Rusty Rat. I did look at the Green Highlander on the site and it is way different than anything I have ever seen, though I like it a lot more. Thanks Norm. Ashby
  10. This is my first attempt in a long time to make some kind of show box fly. I know these two are a little ways away form being there, but tell me what you think, what I need to do to improve, and some tips as well would be welcome. One is a Rusty Rat with a little twist in there. The other is a Green Highlander with a little twist as well. I think a few more times with each and I'll have a nice looking fly. Thanks for your imput guys. Ashby

    Hello all

LMAO now those are clasic brain farts. Thanks for the welcome and the pics Graham. We all got a chuckle out of those. Ashby
  12. I use 6/0 and 8/0 for every thing I tie. I don't break the thread as easy using those two. Big flys I will use 3/0 or Kevlar thread (for bass plugs) you can't break that stuff.

    Hello all

Thanks for the welcome guys. The plane in my avatar is the one I work on. It's the Global Hawk. It's the larges remote control airplane in the world with a wing span of over 116 feet used for high altitude picture taking. Nice to see there are some Vets in here as well, got to love those F100s. Ashby
  15. Hello all. My name is Ashby. I'm stationed out here in CA and have been for the past 11 years with the Air Force. I am an Aircraft Mechanic by trade and have worked on two high altitude reconnaissance airframe since I have been in, the U-2 and the new Global Hawk. Other than that I love to fish, tie flies, 4X4, and hunt, anything to do with out doors. That's one reason I work on planes, you are never stuck in an office. I have been checking out this site and I'm very excited about getting a lot of tips from all of you as well as giving my own 2 cents when asked. So hello to you all and I look forward to meeting you on here. Ashby
  16. Hey JST4TROUT, good to see I'm not the only new guy here! I'm also here in CA but in the north above Sac. Like you we have a ton of nice little hush hush spots up here. Welcome to the site. From what I have seen so far on this site, the lot of us are not without an abundance of info and help. I'm still just trying to take it all in myself. Again, welcome and I'll see you around on here.
  17. Hello everyone! I'm new here and have spent the last few days just looking over this site and being blown away by all the info. To the point, I started off with a Regal and love it for the spring loaded jaws it has. Down side to it is when you want to palmer, rib etc. it's not the vice to use. However, it is great for salt water, bass and big (freshwater) game flys because of the power of those jaws. After using it for a few years I finally sprung for a Renzetti and love it. In fact that is the one I use most now because of it's ease and broad rang of use. It has spoiled me now. In the past couple of years I have not been able to do that much tying (Air Force deployments) but now I'm getting back into it full swing and this site is just what I needed to help me get back to it. :yahoo: So it's back to checking you guys out.
