I've gotten myself neck deep in these online courses....

Classes with homework are a whole lot more time consuming than I remember from way back when... Once I get my bearings there I'll get back to the vise.

That will most definitely take your time. Both python and javascript are really cool languages. Much easier than Java. If you have a chance check out typescript. It's strongly typed Javascript. It really helps get rid of runtime errors and it transpiles into Javascript. Have fun!!!

Nice tie @Poopdeck. The holy grail isa great pick. Fantastic caddis pattern.

  3. I learned this "trick" from Charlie Craven. Instead of pulling straight down on the thread, pull it across the bottom of the hook directly towards you. Pulling down will pull the hair down and around the hook shank. Pulling it towards you will allow the thread tension to tighten around the hair and since you're pulling across the bottom of the shank not pull the hair down. The two loose wraps just gather the hair prior to pulling across. [edit] answered before I saw this was in reference to tying jigs. I'd still say isolate the thread tension from the hair.[/edit]

    Brooks' Rainbow Blond

Not sure if Brooks did a rainbow pattern in his blond series, but if he did it would look something like this, only better

    Brooks-Rainbow-Blond-8.jpg

    Hook: #8, 2xl
Thread: White switch to black for head
    Tail: White bucktail
Body: Coats & Clark Metallic Thread, silver (original used flat silver tinsel)
    Wing: Olive over pink bucktail

    Nice, very nice

  5. @Troy Bishop very nice variations. The Gunny and the Taylor are 2 of my favorite fisheries. Hit the Gunny at the Neversink area. Cross the channel. Walk pout to the river 10-12 minutes. Head up stream, you'll have a great time. Hit the hog trough of the Taylor in the evening. Stand on the bridge and you'll see the footballs in the water. Go small in the trough. Oh yeah, welcome to the site

Fishing the local pond, caught a Bass that struck my fishing fly hard. Good to have forceps handy. Caught and released to get bigger!

It's their big bug, they can't seem to figure out how to program it to be truthful or reliable.... Like voters with their politicians 🙃

(They don't call it lying btw, believe it or not their term of art is that the program "hallucinates".)

Welcome back btw, how was your trip?

Hallucinates, I love it. Also love the voters line. Thanks for asking It was the worst we've ever seen the San Juan in 20 years. I hate to admit this but my buddy and I only caught 6 fish total in 3 days. 1/day/each of us. On the other hand we each had 2 hookups per day.  Usually down on the Juan you see fish stacked up at your feet (where the notorious San Juan shuffle was born), this time zilch. There was about a foot, foot and a half of visibility the further downstream of the dam you got.  The 6 we caught were pretty nice. But not what we call "guide fish". I hope you fare better in Connecticut if you get out.

Geez Louise!!!  I had no idea.

These commercially made systems I've seen now look like a waste of time to duplicate.  Thanks for enlightening (shocking?) me.  :D

Yep build your own. I started with 3 3"x1" drilled with 36 holes that I pegged w/ dowels to hold 2 spools/dowel. Now Those are all filled and more spools are on the bench. Plus filled bobbins too.

  9. Well so much for my consulting business.  I did notice that you asked, "Use ingredients of your own selection to design a dozen newly created flies of your own invention to catch trout in a broad range of seasons and locations". The patterns suggested weren't "inventions" but rather tried and true patterns. Maybe that's just a small quibble. I can see chatGPT creating a lot more instant fly fishing experts.  Just what we need.

And of course enjoy your trip to Connecticut.

I never really see a big hatch of them on the rivers I fish here in MA, but starting sometime in June, I do see the occasional dun flying around, not on the water.  The nymphs seem to do well anyway.    They can get pretty big here.

That's a mahogany alright. I think we tied em as 16s with some 14s too
